Very sorry to hear this. Just imagining the loss of my gear sends me scurrying to check my insurance (not worth the paper it's written on in value terms).
If you live in the UK you can buy dedicated camera insurance, though it's not cheap, when I last checked it'd cost me £500 p.a. to cover my gear, and of course unless someone broke into my house it's unlikely I'd lose it all (still never happen as I always carry a camera and lenses with me) but you still have to list the lenses/cameras.
Sounds very much like your car insurance should cover a break-in into a locked car boot - though the maximum payout may exceed the value of your equipment.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I have been in a similar situation - and I still miss my fa 43 even though it is one year since it was stolen.
You can register your Pentax stuff on Pentaxforums as well. Services such as stolencamerafinder are not worth much imo, for instance they don't recognize photos I put on my blog. Only if I had put them on Flickr would there be a chance.
Insurance covered about 50% of my loss. I hope they help you out as well.

I've removed a post pointing to an ebay auction implying that somehow the seller is involved because of geographical proximity. Please don't do things like that for reasons that should be obvious.

Thank you all for you comments and thoughts. Its great to have the support of so many people.
I will be home tomorrow so will be able to check out insurance polices, although I'm not holding out to much hope ! Not heard anything from the Police and I agree with a number of you that it seems to random for an act of casual thieving, but I put the gear in the boot miles away !
For me, there are positives that have come from this. I've made new friends, I've realised how important photography is to me and it's even brought me closer to some members of my family.

A quick and not very positive update
Insurance was pants, Contents insurance doesn't cover personal items away from home and Motor insurance only covers up to £100 with a £150 excess !!
I'm keeping an eye on ebay, but nothing yet and I've also registered with
cameratrace.com and stolencamerafinder.com. Incidentally these sites work by tracing the serial number embedded in your images but its not the same number as the one on your camera (or warranty card).
Keep remembering stuff that was in the bag, Gutted....

I don't want to be wise after the fact, but to agree with Smeggy, never lock your camera (or anything else that might look valuable) in the boot of your car then leave the car where it is. It is far too tempting.
I always try and keep my gear with me until I return to the car and only put it in the boot when I'm about to drive away.
I would add that £500 a year for insurance sounds like a lot. I pay £300/year for about £10k of equipment, including accidental damage and losing items as well as theft on new for old. Always found it to be pretty good value considering.

It is very easy and much more cost effective to extend your household policy to cover camera gear up to a given value on a world wise basis - I have £2.5K cover and do not think it costs much more than £40 or so per annum.

I learnt the hard way in Gran Canaria many years ago, when I parked the hire car, we then put all our stuff in the boot - and came back 2hrs later to find most of it gone because the "car park attendants" had nicked our gear and from other cars too! BTW the car was a early PUNTO and they are dead easy to break into!
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

I've have heard a lot of scare stories - my GF's sister in law (who's Roamanian) were visitng Bucharest a few years ago - on the way back to Germany they stopped at a hotel. Leaving items in the boot covered and only taking 'essentials' with them....She thought the staff looked 'shifty' and would you believe it - car had disappeared by the next morning...
In Canada two years ago we turn up at Car rental place with cases and camera gear and given keys to our car - hatchback but no luggage cover we rejected the car instantly, the clerk took some convincing the car wasn't fit for purpose but in the end we got a booted car, much better.
I didn't think random thefts from car boots were a regular occurrence, was there anything in the car on show that would alert a potential thief of a honey-pot in the boot? (TomTom, Garmin Satnav?). Maps/guidebooks/magazines?

As for cover via house insurance you have to be 100% sure you are covered for "personal possessions away from home" also be sure it covers for accidental damage both in the home and outside, I also make sure that "camera equipment" is specified on my schedule, if it isn't on the renewal certificate when it arrives I ring them up and get them to send me one that does.
