Really like the first one. Simple, elegant, effective . Not sure about the second, I'd to see a bit of a gap between glass and rim of hat.

Agree the first photograph is the one to be played with, maybe a mono but retaining the milky blue table and maybe a layer insert of something wild and different instead of the grass. The composition is fantastic, well created and aligned.

The first shot works well for me with that 10 to 2 clock face semi symmetrical positioning - personally I would have converted to a contrasty monochrome to give it more "punch", but having said that the clear quality of the image shows much better at full size
I'm not so keen on the second image - purely because of the background, a bit too distracting (even though it's well out of focus)

Thanks for the comments folks. I will have a play with the mono conversion, and yes John, the 10 to 2 was deliberate. I remember years ago discovering the preponderance of hands on a watch placed in those positions for marketing shots.

Like something out of the 1930s - even the colours. That 1st one is super.
As for ten minutes to two, surely you remember "Listen with Mother"? It was the highlight of my infant day.

I’d go along with everything said above, but I’m intrigued by the viewpoint of the first one. It’s obviously what makes the shot so effective, but I can’t work out how you got the shot - is there a Pentax drone I don’t know about?

Haha, no drone involved. Just a 21mm lens on the K-1 and me standing on another garden chair. I pre-set the exposure and used LV to frame the image. The flippy screen was invaluable here. as I was holding the camera at arms length in front of me.I’d go along with everything said above, but I’m intrigued by the viewpoint of the first one. Capture had to timed precisely to avoid Rio or Ripley photo bombing me !

Thank you, Peter. As a “long arm” shot, it’s very impressive. It looks as if it was taken from quite a distance above the table, nonetheless. I’d guess your dogs thought it was a weird new game!

I think I see the point that people are making about a B&W version, but it loses the contrast between the hat and the table top which, to me, is an important part of the original picture.

It's one of those images where both versions have their merits - agreed on the hat and table top point

... which has made me look at both again - and notice what I should have spotted before. With the colour version, my eyes immediately go to the table and hat, then to the surrounding chairs and grass i.e. starting in the middle then moving outwards. But with the mono version, my eyes go first to the table and chairs then to the hat i.e. starting at the edge then moving to the middle. Such depths of psychology and perception from such a simple picture... .It's one of those images where both versions have their merits
