Just bought the above sans lens and then read about the open aperture system and it seems that it won't work with all m42 lenses? I am planning to use it with a helios 55mm f2 (has a pin at the back but no A/M setting).

Really want to get out with camera as soon as it arrives do I need a new lens???

Any advice appreciated,

Daniel

You need the later SMC lenses which have an auto/manual switch on them to use full aperture metering. Remember that the mercury batteries are no longer made and you need Wein cell link or similar

It's about 30 years since I used either of mine so I can't remember the routine but here is the manual link

I think you will have stop down metering with non-S-M-C lenses. There were a few late Super Takumar lenses that did have the extra bits for open aperture metering as well.

Check out the manual here link

Thanks Ken thats great. Ive found the same question asked on the other forum and on this one actually and the answer seems to be that my helios 44-2 58mm f2 will be ok on the body..............we shall see

Well enjoy the camera, it is the best of the Spotmatic dynasty. You can pick up lenses for ridiculously low amounts considering how fine they are and use them on your DSLR.

I particularly recommend the 28mm F3.5 SMC Takumar with matching hood it's breathtakingly sharp.
