OK I admit it, I'm weak, I gave in and ordered a K10D. It is arriving early next week (the shop in town sold their last one 3 hours before I got there, I'm too proud to buy it from Jessops and too lazy to drive to Watford).

I can't wait to play with my new toy, but there is a question which I can't make up my mind of the answer to

What to do with my DL2?

On the one side, it will never be worth more than it's worth now. It's in good condition and would fetch as much as any 2nd hand DL2 on ebay, which would help to offset the silly ammount of money I just spent.

On the other side, it's still a very good camera and it can run on AA's which the K10D can't do (come on Hahnel, give me an AA battery grip!). Also it gives me a second body such that I can have a long lens on one and a short lens on the other. Dad and I both used to do this with film bodys to great effect.

So then, do those of you with K10Ds still have your *ists as well? Does the K10 eclipse the *ist capabilities by so far that the *ist becomes not worth the bother? or is it basically a waste to mount the 18-55 kit lens on a K10D anyway so that I might as well leave it on the *ist and use the K10 for my longer/better lenses?

Much as I wanted to hang on to my *ist-D, it just didn't do some of the things that I wanted of it - buffer too small and too slow was my main, if not only complaint...

Managed to sell it to my Dad (it's his fault I use Pentax, still have his original KM that was bought to celebrate my birth...) to drag him into the digital age... Would've been a pain anyway having 2 types of card to worry about!

If you're happy with the DL2 and "need" a 2nd body then keep it if not like you say you'll never get more for it than if you sell it now...

I'm keeping the DS for those moments when I think "that would look better with the wide/telephoto* lens, I'll just get it out of the case and put it on....oh bugger the moment has gone!" moments.

Oh and to be a real poseur and try to look like a real photographer - I already have a bailey-esq leather jacket.

My DS is now on permanent loan to my sister-in-law who was using an MZ50. However she is still obseesed with photographing her children (aka my nephews). While it is not in my camera bag as a second body (either the Super A or the MZ6can fulfil that role) at least it is technically recoverable. I'm slightly more dubious about loaning her the 18-55 - I have the 16-45 but that is a pain if you want to take wide angle snapshots with flash at a moments notice. I have to dig out the external flash and then the moment is gone.... But without the 18-55 she only has the FA 28-80 (and a cheap secondhand Sigma 70-200) which is a bit limiting fron her POV.

I have a K10D on its way to me and I'm very much looking forward to using it . I currently have 1 x MZ-S and 1 x *istD. I sold all my other Pentax film cameras including a Super-A, MZ-6, MZ-S, 3 x *ist-D bodies, and my *ist-DS.

I'll be keeping both of the bodies I have now, not only because they are in excellent condition, but I hope to be able to use them occasionally also. Dual card systems is not an issue for me as I just keep a couple of cards with the appropriate camera and copy them to a GigaOne 40Gb if/when I fill them.

At such time as I decide that a particular camera is not getting sufficient use, I may decide to sell. For now . . .

. . . I would keep your DL2.

Now we both have a K10D we will keep just one *istDS as a backup.

If keeping your DL2 means you can't afford to eat, obviously you must then sell it.

If the couple hundred quid won't make or break you, keep it.

If having two bodies and two different sets of battery gear will break you physically, sell it.

If you're so in love with it and get all sentimental, keep it.

If ...

You'll have the K10D soon as you say, so maybe it's best to wait until you've gotten to know your new best friend and then decide whether or not to sell the DL2.

Apart from selling a KX with 55mm lens many years ago, which I still regret, I have kept my various Pentax bodies and lenses, partly because they are not worth very much, but mainly for sentimental reasons. In particular the Auto 110SLR is an amazing little camera but highly unlikely to be used again.

The K10D is my first digital SLR but I shall keep a C*n*n I*u* compact,
which is used by my other half and by me at work.

I have a similar dilemma. My K10 supersedes a DS and a K100 both of which I still have. I loved my DS and had kept it as a backup to the K100 which definately felt it was aiming at a lower point in the market.

I only really need one backup body but which one, or rather which function, do I give up. The pentaprism or the AS?

I don't think I want to sell either. My other half is quite happy with her point & click F20 Fuji. I'm contemplating hanging on to both the DS and the K100 with a view of passing one to one of my many nieces and nephews if one should should show an interest. My youngest daughter did A level photography a few years ago but, disappointingly, has gone down the Canon route.

This may all change when we finally see the expected high prices for the new Pentax lenses. Having got the K10 obtaining at least one lens with a high-speed focusing motor is definitely a must-have and I might need a 2nd mortgage or have to sell all sorts of things.

My DL was bought as a stand-in for the D I broke..

The D is repaired, so that gets most use because of what it offers over the DL...the D seems to have a gravitational pull to the ground and survived it's second fall intact hew:

Still contemplating the K10D, don't know whether to PX the DL or not

Still have 3 film cameras, plus the Mamiya 645...

I for one will be keeping my D, despite the two sets of batteries and cards, It WILL come in handy not having to swap lenses so often, now all I have to do is find a reasonably sized backpack that will take two bodies with lenses attached!

it's arrived

the battery is charging as I type!

obviously havn't been able to fire it up yet, but it feels sooo much better in the hand than the DL2. Everything about it just shouts "I am well made, I am a good camera, anything you still can't photograph is therefore your own problem". Not that this wasn't more or less true of the DL2 as well, but the K10 is another level. Even the switches and dials feel better than the corresponding ones on the DL2.

now, how to distract myself so I actually get some work done today....

If you make your living off photography or are a serious practitioner of the craft, it's always wise to have a backup body.

I now keep the*st D as a backup in case anything happens to the K10D
