Spam Antivirus

I went onto Photobucket last night to look at a gallery and a Spam antivirus called Security Tool downloaded itself onto my computer. It started warning of dire concequences if I did not pay X amount for for a removal tool. I've been to my compuer man this morning and it is bogus, he's had about 20 people in with the same thing. The worst part was it disables parts of the computer and there is no way to uninstall it. I don't really know if it downloaded itself or it happened when I clicked on something. So just a note "be careful out there"

Thanks for the heads up. Guess I won't be accessing my Photobucket account today.
Hopefully Photobucket are aware of this problem and will deal with it.

I had the same problem on my sons notebook.
He uses facebook and I'm guessing this is where he got the virus from. As is mentioned it is very hard to get rid of the virus, luckily he has nothing on the notebook that needed saving so it was a case of re-installing windows.
The Virus is a bogus anti-virus program called "Security Essentials 2010".
BEWARE!!!!

P.S. I think I read it's only a problem for PC's with Windows XP, don't take that as gospel though.

As it happens mine is running XP. I'm told it is not a true virus but a type of programme. That's why it's not detected and can't be removed by antivirus software.

Nice. Sounds almost identical to the Photobucket virus from 12 months ago...

I believe most of these 'visit a legit webpage and get infected' viruses are carried in a banner ad (which are usually provided by an ad broker). Even Google got caught out sometime last year.

Yet another reason to prefer Flickr I guess

I have no idea about VISTA (I skipped that nightmare) but with Windows 7, all files that are trying to install themselves including ones from Microsoft require my consent before they can be installed. That could be probably overridden by changing your preferences, but in a case like this, I rather leave the default settings to prevent this sort of nightmare. XP was rather lax when it came to this sort of download security.

.. .yet another reason to use FF and NoScript and ABP.

If you don't know what they are, I suggest that you find out.

The rogueware? No, it should be able to be detected by a decent package. The bigger question is how it got there - are you up to date on Microsoft Updates?

Will ABP block it? Windows 7? I am reluctant to visit my Photobucket page, as I know it is a pain to remove.

Another reason not to like Photobucket???

Copied from the Terms of use, in other words: The fine print

Quote:
Proprietary Rights in Content on Photobucket.

6.1
Photobucket does not claim any ownership rights in the text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, musical works, works of authorship, applications, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") that you post on or through the Photobucket Services. By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the Photobucket Services, you hereby grant to Photobucket and other users a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such Content, including without limitation distributing part or all of the Site in any media formats through any media channels, except Content marked "private" will not be distributed outside the Photobucket Services. Photobucket and/or other Users may copy, print or display publicly available Content outside of the Photobucket Services, including without limitation, via the Site or third party websites or applications (for example, services allowing Users to order prints of Content or t-shirts and similar items containing Content). After you remove your Content from the Photobucket Website we will cease distribution as soon as practicable, and at such time when distribution ceases, the license to such Content will terminate. If after we have distributed your Content outside the Photobucket Website you change the Content’s privacy setting to "private," we will cease any further distribution of such "private" Content outside the Photobucket Website as soon as practicable.
Does this accentuated section says what I think it says? Bye,bye copyright if you don't mark it "private"?

I marked this, referring to the thread about changing law on "orphaned pictures"
from a few days ago.
Best regards,

Martin.

If you don't use Photobucket, and I presume Flikr, has the same type of Clause in their terms of use, how do you load images into PU. Or am I wrong about flickr?

Don't worry Barrie, I had that one last year and after a few weeks it vanished just as quick as it appeared. It is just a scam to get you to part with your cash.

I use Flickr...sometimes and from what I read here they do have a different clause in their terms.
Certainly not stating:

Quote:
By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the Photobucket Services, you hereby grant to Photobucket and other users a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such Content, including without limitation distributing part or all of the Site in any media formats through any media channels, except Content marked "private" will not be distributed outside the Photobucket Services.
Or anything that even resembles or could be interpreted as the above quote.

If you are talking about Flickr ...you are seriously wrong, I am afraid.
Best regards,

Martin.

I can't tell you that since I no longer will use any of those photo share sites. I use use on my own website and specific gallery pages from that site. I had too many bad experiences in the past to deal with them any longer.
