Some Trees

Hi all

Here are some pictures of some trees... all taken over the last couple of months, in various parts of Yorkshire and the South West... and not a multi-exposure in sight (phew)...

Lovely. And inspirational as always. 6 8 9 and 10 leap out at me, but it would be a different set tomorrow

I like pictures of trees and I like these!

An interesting set. I keep getting drawn back to No. 3 - there's something about the colours in this shot - the pastel shades are unusual and work well with so many examples of the same species in the shot, together with the bracken underneath. Very enjoyable.

A great set. No.7 is my pick of the set.

Never an easy job to get good representative shots like these.

Great set - and the sort of photo I take. Nos 3, 7 and 9 are the stand out ones for me; no3 for the pastel shading and light, no 7 for the 'completeness' and delicacy of the trees, and no 9 for its 'clutter' (for want of a better way of putting it - or chaos as you have put it!)

Unless there is mist then I'd go for the no sky images all the time. 3,7 and 9 for me. 9 would be my fave without the top right sky.

The set as a whole make a very interesting and attractive panel. They would look good as a set of prints on a gallery wall but if pressed to identify my individual favourites they would be #6 and #10, #6 for its clear cut lines and #10 for similar reasons but with the added attraction of a very light touch.

For me, trees are amongst the most difficult of subjects. So much clutter, nowhere for the eye to settle, unless the photographer is very careful about the composition, focus etc. This set succeeds where many others fail, not in all of the shots, but overall it is very accomplished and attractive.

Standout shots for me are 6, 10 and most especially number 3, with the Silver Birch in the centre giving a focal point to the scene. The other thing that strikes me, apart from the considered approach and skilful compostion is the natural colouring and obvious camera skill that has delivered technically excellent images, free of shake.

Thanks all for continued thoughts and comments on these... Adrian, yup, agreed re the sky in No.9... drags the eye away from the subject... couldn't find a way of excluding it unfortunately so tried to minimise its impact instead... happy with sky elsewhere though as integrated within compositions... David T, David S, Tim, Mark, John, Nigel, Gary and Andy thanks for thoughts and favourites... Always useful... My faves 3, 6, 7 and 10 btw... 3 technically very tricky... Losing the light, handheld, howling gale, difficult to stand up... wide-open, which shows I think slight softness in far left of frame, ok I think as helps to focus on central birch in this instance... 9 also handheld... All others shot with tripod on relatively still days, mostly towards late afternoon...

They really are a very good set of photos Bill, and as has already been said would benefit from being viewed in a gallery (physical). Nice to see such a variety done so well

I've almost given up attempting Tree shots, what I see through the viewfinder ends up being a mess in the image

Trees are fascinating all year round, not always an easy subject to get right! i think you have done a splendid job with this set, hard to pick a fave but i think i'll go for 9 because of the twisting mystery. Can i ask have you straightened the verticals or are they straight from the camera?

Maria, orientation/verticals etc are straight from the camera... some mighty weird shapes in there though, esp 2, 4 and 6... do give me a shout if you think there might be some that need straightening up etc... always good to know...
