Some additional information on how it is handled in the Netherlands:

Quote:

A new law put in force by the Dutch government called the conformiteitsbeginsel means that you may be able to get your electrical goods repaired even after the guarantee has expired.

This change in the law has arisen when the Dutch government decided that a new EU law to extend the guarantee period to two years didn't go far enough to protect consumers.

In the Netherlands an expected lifetime (technische levensduur) has been calculated for most consumer products by the consumentenbond together with the HCC. For example a video camera is expected to last 6 years while a notebook computer is expected to last 5 years.

The shop that sold you the goods must therefore repair or replace the goods if they become faulty before the expected lifetime - even if this is after any guarantee has expired. The only exceptions to this are if there has been 'inexpert use' (ondeskundig gebruik) or the equipment has been too intensively used.

If the shop refuses to repair the device, you have two options. If the shop is affiliated to the UNETO VNE, you can go to the geschillen commissie. Otherwise it is a case of going to the magistrate's court (rechter)

That is NOT legislation and there is, as far as I know, no requirement in UK law to offer a 2 year warranty.

Pentax and others specifically offer just a ONE year.

They do that here in the Netherlands as well, but it is not allowed to restrict the consumers rights in warranty agreements.
The law I described above gives us as Dutch consumers a good position in demanding free repair outside the 1 or 2 year warranty as specified by the producers. The only downside is that you have be quite convincing to get what you are entitled to.

It's vaguely covered by the "Sale of Goods" Act in the UK. Goods have to be of merchantable quality and fit for use, free from defects etc. So it could be argued that a product should last a lot longer than 1 year. Some shops tried to cover themselves by stating that they gave a 1 year guarantee and that after that period you would have to contact the manufacturer.... I doubt if that's legal though. The responsibility has always been the shops.

They make a lot of money out of extended warranties here so they won't be happy if they have to cover items for say 5 years with the basic guarantee.

I bought my DS back in 2004 whilst on a holiday in Florida. Just an extra camera body in my luggage when I came back home. Six months later, Pentax in Slough repaired it under warranty.

The EU two-year rule can be enforced in the UK, but it may take some perseverance. See This story

It was on the BBC Radio 2 News today, same story.

Notice at the end of that story Amazon had been giving just a six
month guarantee, which has been illegal for years. Some people on
this forum think Amazon are the bees knees
