Almost anything would be better than the Sigma 70-300mm at 300mm. I wouldn't personally bother with an M42 lens at this length. If you don't need f/4 the Pentax 55-300mm is excellent. If you need f/4 the Pentax A* 300mm f/4 is also very good.

I wonder if the SMC Takumar 300/4 (M42) will give any IQ gain over my Sigma70-300. Have read user reviews over at the other forum that report a lot of fringing but that it does clean up very well in pp.
Interested in tripod mounted landscape use.
