I notice that it has the plastic mount but with quick-shift this time which I think is essential in a very fast lens.

Initial price at release $249.95, so probably £250 this side of the pond.

I noticed that too. Nikon and Canon both have 50mmf1.8 plastic fantastics for £100 odd. I thought this was going to be one of those. It looks like one with added quick shift. It does seem to have rather confused the DA and DA-L nomenclature.
It does seem an expensive budget prime. Pentax seem to be screaming, this lens is £100 better than yours. The FA50mm f1.4 looks a very reasonable price in comparison.

The prices always drop to 'street prices' after launch.
It is curious that, with the exception of Pentax ltd lenses, manufacturers feel the need to make APSC format lenses demarcated by focal lengths from another format altogether. It certainly didn't happen when MF gave way to 135.

According to amateurphotographer.co.uk Pentax UK released a price list which says the RRP of the DA 50mm 1.8 is indeed £249.99.

Unless the price drops a reasonable amount after launch I think I'd just pay a little extra and get the FA f1.4.

It depends on the street price, the optical performance with the virtually circular diaphragm design and the ability to use QuickShift.
I wouldn't dismiss it yet, even though we already have the 43mm and 50mm f1.4 FA lenses. Time will tell.

The 35DAL is £170, with the quickshift and DA status it would be difficult to see it below £200.
