lets get some terminology correct, the 52mm you refer to is the size of filter that fits the lens and nothing at all to do with the lens being wide or a telephoto.
18mm to 55mm is a wide angle zoom and the 75 to 300 is a telephoto zoom lens, I would have thought that a range of 18mm to 300mm would have covered most eventualities, just exactly what do you think you dont have? Getting back to your post title, I cant see that a wider lens is going to be much use.

Take the 18-55 and the 75-300 with you. Or look for an all-in-one lens since the Ds isn't sealed and could get very dusty on safari. If you can afford it consider a Bigma - Sigma 50-500 - it would be perfect, but heavy!
A non HSM model shouldn't be too much secondhand. You don't need HSM with the Ds, though it is nice to have (but not essential) for when you upgrade. Mine is a non HSM model and works fine with my K-5.
When I went to Tanzania with my Ds I took an 18-55 and a 28-300. The latter lived on the camera. I only used the kit lens for a couple of landscape shots from camp.
If I were to go again (I wish!) I would probably take the Bigma and my 17-70.
Most of the time 300mm is long enough - but for leopards and for rhino I would have liked a longer lens.
You don't need anything wider than 18mm. Seriously - you don't.

thanks guys, guess i should stick with what ive got or buy a new camera which i cant really afford at the moment!

Have a great trip, and don't spend all your time viewing wildlife through the viewfinder. Take time to stand and stare without taking photos too.
