Slow write speed with Pentax kr?

Posted 07/06/2012 - 21:40 Link
Dear all, I am a proud owner of a Pentax KR. The problem is the slow write times which means that it seems to take an age before I can see the image on the rear screen. I am shooting RAW but am I using a setting which is slowing the processing down?

Many thanks for your ideas and help,

Pete

Do you have 'Highlight/Shadow Correction' turned on or one of the Noise Reduction settings on as these will slow down the write time considerably.

Michael

Many thanks for your prompt reply and the solution Michael. I beats me why anyone would put useful features into a camera only for users to switch them off to speed up write times.

Many thanks,

Pete

Presumably it's for people that don't need the write speed and want to do some of the processing in camera. Everything can be done via your chosen editor should you need the faster speed.

just gives the user more choice at the end of the day which is always a good thing.

Hi, just found this post. I too was puzzled why the camera seemed to take an age to save images. I've tried all the processing options and it seems that the biggest culprit is "distortion correction". The shadow and highlight correction options make hardly any difference to write times.

I can understand that - if you relate it to software processes on a computer, distortion corrections would be one of the longer 'filter' applications in terms of the time it takes to 'do its stuff' after clicking OK. Noise reduction also, assuming its being written into a pixel layer, which is what is happening in both these cases on the camera. Even in RAW, whilst the settings are recorded in the file, the processing still has to be carried out and applied to the JPEG preview for LCD screen display.

On the K7 I have found that these features, when active, do not slow down the burst shooting rate, so I can fire away. But they do add to the time its takes to display the image (or the last image in a burst) on the LCD display. This isn't a problem if you are just shooting with the viewfinder and the settings are already made - but it can slow you down if you're relying on checking the preview image to assess your settings and reshoot.

For JPEGs you're stuck with it if the corrections are needed - I wouldn't want to carry out these sorts of edits on a JPEG file ideally. But if its RAW then they can be switched off, it can all be done on the computer later.

What SD card are you using? If you are using a class 4 it may well be slow writing to the card. Ideally use a class 10.

I have found the speed of the SD card really makes a difference.

As JAK says, go for a class 10.
