Not brilliant, but I feel the problems are at my end of the camera, not nesessarily with the AF

To be fair, I think that seagulls are probably the easiest birds there are to photograph as they are pretty fearless (at least in the south-west) and as a result you can get in very close, and they present a good size target for the AF mechanism.
