Silver K3 still available

I am 'convinced' and I do hope to go professional.

But I simply don't have that kind of money to spend on a camera system at the moment. Even pros have to justify that kind of money.

When I, hopefully, reach the limits of the kit that I have, then I will have to consider it (just as Gary has done).

In the meantime I plan to get a 2nd body (a K3, preferably silver), a longer telephoto option (bigma or, preferably, a TC) and continue to produce substandard images to the limits of the wholly inadequate APSC equipment that I have

I've never seen one of these in the flesh, so to speak. Is the silver finish paint on metal or something else? It would nice to think it might be anodised as chrome finishes used to be, but I guess that would be too expensive now.

That's the issue right there. Previously the body was silver because that was the colour of the materials used to construct it. These days however paint seems to feature more prominently...

Are you sure they were not painted in the past? (genuine question)

I am not an expert, but yes, it is coated, these cameras I guess are made of different materials so it could not be otherwise.

I put my k-5 next to my MX and they look very similar. If you have a silver DA ltd lens, that is the same colour and effect. My K-5 after 3 years looks like new, the silver finish is very durable.

Lots of threads on the subject, here one.

I can see why Gary has gone Full Frame.
I've a feeling "when" Pentax release a FF camera I'm going to be wanting one.

Did I notice a few HDR and milky waterfall images in that lot

I'm not certain that that was the case. I seem to remember the silver 'wearing' away at the edges on my OM2 and K1000 giving that lovely 'used' look. Wasn't there a brassy, bronze material showing through?

I understand that it's a paint finish and there seems to be a mixed view of how 'plasticky' it looks. I would love to actually see one before I commit but I doubt that will be possible. Of course there might not be any around when I eventually 'flash the plastic'.

The chrome was anodised, not painted. The black was painted on brass originally, and is again on the MX-1. The later of course plastic started to take over and the surface was probably painted. It doesn't wear so nicely as metal finishes do.

I was impressed by the Pentax anodising process, it was actually better looking than the other marques of its day, even including Contax. But in its turn it wasn't as good as the unbelievably superb finish on the Voigtlander Bessamatic of 1959. Ultimately though the Voigtlander finish was too expensive, there is a limit to what the market will stand.

Ricoh no longer have the Silver edition in their webstore

SRS are still offering them but I guess the writing is on the wall. Too many weeks before I can consider one means I'm just going to have to make do with the second rate, naff, common all garden black one

Still I shall just have to try and make do, although my pictures would have been much better with the silver one.......

They probably would have been better lit with the light reflecting off that shiny body.
