Crazy, isn't it ! The software supplied with each camera is modified to be camera specific !
But you should have had PDCU4 with the K-r and you need THAT software to open the K-r dng files !
Meanwhile, I have found that PSE11 also opens my K-r dng files without any problems.

Developer 3.0 with a K30? Are you sure?
K-30s were supplied with "PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4" and that should open DNG files from both K-r and K-30 along with RAW PEF files from the K-r.

YEP that's what was in the box. I might have utility 4 with the K-r will check when back home.I have been using pse 7 and 11 to do raw files from K-R and K30 just fancied trying the pentax software and i must say that i like the results with the K30 files in silkypics

PDCU is actually SilkyPix with a Pentax wrapper around it. PDCU4 may even be a more up to date version that the SilkyPix3 you have.
I wonder why your camera came with SP and not PDCU?

My K30 was supplied with SIlkypix 3. What I like is my dng's will open in my ancient Photoshop Elements 6!

Vairy intereth-ting! PDCU4, supplied with my K-5, will also happily open RAWs from my *ist DS!

As the format of .PEF and .DNG changes over time the PC baced processing software will also need to change and update. There is no reason to get rid of old formats, just leave them there and as someone changes camera they can have just one version of the software to process files from the whole family of cameras.
I can use PDCU 4 on files from the *istD too and similarly PSE 9 works all the way through to the K-5 and K-r.
