Sigma Vs Sigma

I am considering upgrading my Sigma EX DG 24-70 to the Sigma 17-70 DC HSM. I am perfectly happy with the optical performance of the 24-70 as a walk about lens. My only gripes are it's size and weight for a lens of this range - plus I prefer the option of going a bit wider - and I like HSM lenses.

Does anybody have any experience of both lenses or an opinion on whether this would be a worthwhile upgrade?

Thanks
Carl

Look at the Pentax 17-70mm at Jessops.
They have them at a very good price atm and I much prefer it over the Sigma I had at one time.

Well that has put the cat amongst the pigeons Mike - had not considered the Pentax due to price - had found the Sigma for £294 delivered from one-stop digital in Hong Kong (all my Sigmas have been from this supplier - service and price have always been excellent). I reckon I should be able to get £200 for the 24-70- mint - boxed - so was thinking less than £100 for the upgrade.

Now - I have checked Jessops and my nearest does not have any in stock but Leeds store does -mmm I suspect I may be driving to Leeds this afternoon!

Cheers

I recently sold my Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 as like you I wanted something a bit wider. I ordered the Pentax 17-70mm from Jessops on Thursday and it arrived Friday. Did the free credit (Might as well use their money rather than mine) and also it tracked through Quidco for another £11.

I'd second Mike's opinion, I had the Sigma 24-70/2.8, a fine lens but wanted something a little wider. I bought the DA 17-70 from a PU member and it hardly ever comes off the camera.

Carl - isn't there an issue with the Pentax version of the 17-70 at or around 50mm (AF won't focus if I remember correctly) ? I know I've seen a few people who have said their's had it. Maybe someone here knows of the problem but in any case I'd research that first before putting my money down.

I have had that problem on 2 separate occasions with used lenses purchased off Ebay which is why I went for a new one. Happy to report it works perfectly from 50mm t0 70mm, I don't have to use my finger to make it focus correctly.

It's an intermittent fault on my lens, and a number of other people have said the same. Certainly worth asking the seller to guarantee that the lens doesn't have the problem.

It's a shame, because it's an excellent lens otherwise, and the extra 20mm over the 16-50 at the top end is very useful.

That said, the issue isn't serious enough to have persuaded me to take it to a repairer. It just happens occasionally, then sorts itself out.

As for IQ, it's not quite as good as the 16-50, but it's not far off. (And the 16-50, bear in mind, costs a lot more.)

Yup, I sometimes shout and scream at mine for ages but it still focuses fine.

Now you see Mike - now that I have corrected the typo - your comment just seems bizarre

Which reminds me - next purchase - new keyboard - this one has not been the same since I spilled a pint of a well known Irish Stout over it at Christmas
