Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX HSM

Search for this elsewhere on PU? or is it Steve's forum? Its come up before. This is the new HSM version. I tried the earlier non HSM AF 24-70mm version. I ended up buying an almost identical but 28-70mm DG EX version with 77mm filter size. The above has an 82mm filter. I mention the filter size because there are other very similar lenses with smaller filter size. I love my version of this lens. It's heavy but my favoured "studio" lens. The 24-70 is sharper than mine but at the time cost twice as much (I paid half of the above link price - supposedly the lens was being phased out at the time). While mine is slightly softer, for most purposes no problems, especially for portraits.

Sigma had a massive price rise and I think SRS is showing the new price and the newer HSM version. The link you gave above does show 'awaiting stock'. Might be interesting to call them, ask about stock, and if the price is correct (which I'm not sure it is!), then if you wanted it, I would snap it up straight away!

Chris - I've bought most of my kit off you (including a recent Sigma 105mm, which I'm very pleased with) so the greed factor took over when I saw the price, but didn't study the detail. Thanks all for your comments - I'll scurry into the corner and try to think before I post in the future...

I've also found it at Microglobe for a few quid more. The thing is, SRS have it at £759!! (I assume that my aging eyes haven't deceived me...) Anybody any experience with this one, good or bad?

(RR - I know I've just sold you my 17-70 in the basis that I needed a longer walkaround lens and wasn't bothered by the loss in quality, but that was last week!!)
