I have one and it can perform well. However it is not stellar wide open at full stretch in my experience, which is a bit of a limitation since thet is how I tend to use it most of the time! However at f11 it is pretty sharp. Worth sacrificing low ISO for (and you get more depth of field)

depends how much money they want, also if its the dg or non dg version, i have had 4 in total and all have been cracking, an i have found them to be sharper wide open at 500mm than the 150-500mm
