Firstly - a great macro lens - I have been using one for a couple of years.
The original hood for this lens does screw in to the filter thread - but if you want to use a filter - you just screw the filter to the camera and the hood to the filter.
A 58mm thread petal hood will cost you about £3 on ebay
As for a reasonable price for the lens - checking ebay - the highest price one has sold for recently was £289 and the lowest was £270. These were described as excellent condition

Forgot to say - the switch you mention is to limit the focal distance

Great help thanks Carl. Lens now bought for £249 in a nice padded Sigma bag too, so quite pleased. Plus "I know where he lives if it goes wrong" Will look for a hood online now
