Use of AF with a remote is set in the options menu on the camera.
It can be either on or off.
The original question was about a wired remote release, And if you read the whole thread you will see where the other types of remote came in.
On my K20D, there are three options in the Function menu (immediate, 3 sec delay, continuous) and the use of a remote for autofocus has to be set to ON in the Custom Setting menu.
The question was not how to set up any remote, but whether one particular non-Pentax item would work. Chris (chrisinkpen) and I found that two different budget releases would work with our two cameras, and that is what I reported.
