shutter problem on ist ds

Fairly bad timing, k10d in the shop getting repaired and now my other body, Ist DS, has developed a slight problem. I press the shutter and it doesn't fire.

Does anyone have a link to what the camera looks like inside, as it seems to be some sort of short just behind the rubber covering, under the shutter button, around the area of what I think is the red sensor?

When I squeeze around that general area a bit then the shutter seems to fire as it should. In any event, I can tell it is some sort of lack of connection when pressing the shutter as opposed to something else, as the half press also doesn't work.

Any thoughts? Links? Someone in Yorkshire to do a quick repair/cleaning of the mechanics while I wait in the shop?

Have you tried using a remote (IR or wired) on it and does it tnen function properly if you do.

If so you could do this on a temporary basis until your K10D is back and then send the DS to the same place.

thanks for that, just tried it and it certainly is a good temporary work-around!

Ok, so if I press extra hard on the shutter it fires. It seems like a simple job for someone skilled enough to be able to open a digital camera but there doesn't seem to be any repair shops in York that don't send the camera to someone else for repairs. I'm hoping there's someone that can fix this while I wait (k10D won't be back for at least another week and this is my only backup)...any ideas?

Most of the repairers I know and use work almost exclusively with film cameras. Bearing in mind the cost od electronics these days, I doubt that there are many who will do digital cameras. The only one I can think of is Asahiphoto.

I must admit, it is one of the reasons I alsways carry a film backup when out with either the D or the K10.

Well, even though I couldn't see the use, I took a mate's suggestion and used a blower on the area around the shutter release, then blew on it hard (by mouth) for good measure. Believe it or not, the shutter is firing perfectly and I'm a happy camper again.

Always glad when repairs are this cheap!
