Shutter priority vs, Aperture priority

I've noticed from exif data that a lot of you guys shoot in shutter priority mode.
Being brought up on an ME Super (AP) I've always considered the depth of field first and then best setting of aperture for lense optimisation.
So, what is the advantage of going shutter priority - especially when you are shooting still life and not for example a sporting event when you would obviously be looking to shoot with a forced high shutter speed?

No idea! This would be the perfect time for Av, so I'd be interested in any answers to that one too.

I'm far more concerned with depth of field than shutter speed 95% of the time for the shots that I do, I can't remember the last time I used Tv mode.

You should not trust the exif data shown in the gallery. It is.....to put it mildly, not very accurate. I always had the impression that Aperture Priority is mostly used amongst Photographer who know their camera. Directly followed by Manual in conjunction with spot metering.

Personally I think, shutter priority doesn't add any advantage to what ever situation you encounter. But that's strictly personal of course.

the k20d is so easy to change the Aperture and shutter and iso in p mode thats all i use. front wheel does shutter speed, rear wheel does Aperture
and holding ok whilst turning front wheel does the iso, and the green button pops it back to auto,

Karl, it really depends on what you are shooting. If freezing of action is mandatory, or to avoid camera shake, go for Tv and select a fast enough shutter.

If depth-of-field is important, shoot in Av mode and select a small enough aperture. This may, however, result in longer exposures, requiring a tripod to steady your camera.

So, for action, use Tv mode, for landscapes, use Av.

I am really interested, because with all the info, available in today's
modern viewfinders, you can control shutter speeds just as easy in AV mode.

And because zooms like the tamron,sigma and pentax in that range mostly offer F5,6 at the far end, optimal performance (IQ wise) peaks usually at about f8 - f11. So I would expect, you like to control the aperture at first. Not to mention controlling DOF.

Same with me, mostly Aperture Priority but the EXIF incorrectly shows Shutter Priority

I use Aperture priority 75% of the time, followed by manual. AV and Tv are of course opposite ends of the same piece of string and I quite often will take a picture when I want a specific shutter speed without changing from Av mode.

My thoughts, exactly. I think TV is a left-over from the old days, before AF. Were shutter speed was controlled with a big round knob beside the prism. In the modern days, with the high ISO performance as a extra mean to gain two or three stops shutter speed, there is even less reason to use TV.

That's good news, I use mine the same way you guys do....when I remember to throw the switch from "normal mode".

I try to always use AP. If I need to be conscious of shutter speed I tend to go for manual.

But,I have a bad habit of returning the switch to normal when I put the camera away, just in case I need to pick it up quickly and "snap" something. But, because of that, I often take a few shots before I remember to think for myself. That's all part of me needing to learn to slow down before shooting
