Shooting indoors with Flash

I tried my luck at taking pictures at basketball games last year, and I was not happy with the results. It seems that the K10 has a lot of noise at 1600 ISO and I did not have a flash. Here is my problem. If I sell my camera, and get a Nikon or Canon, It would cost me more than it's worth. By buying a flash, I would be investing more money and getting deeper into commitment. How effevtive is the Pentax at freezing a subject with a flash since the Sync shutter speed it 180th of a second, and how realistic would it be if Pentax's new camera had a much greater Flash sync than the the current DSLR's Pentax has? I don't think getting rid of my Pentax is the answer.

The flash sync speed is irrelevant, it is the duration of the flash that freezes action and might typically be 1/20000 sec. However, you will need the most powerful flash you can buy to cover a basketball game and you will have to be pretty close to tha action.

What lens were you using? A more expensive lens with a wider aperture may be helpful, but would obviously cost much more.
