Shake reduction off for tripod use - why?

K20D:
When using the cable remote and no selftimer selected the SR system is on.
Cable remote and 2 sec delay => SR is off

When you select either of the modes for the wireless remote on the camera then the SR system is off.
For the wireless remote it is allso because it has no half-press setting for focussing and stabilising.

I leave SR on when I am using my rickety tripod (OK I know I should get a better tripod!) I figured that seeing as I can see movement through the lens when zoomed in at say 300mm that the body is therefore obviously moving so SR left on would be better.

I've just never heard of this before, I assumed it was done with the magnets. Can you remember where you read it?

Wish I could tell you Dan. I read a lot and it could have come from anywhere, although I have a feeling it was from some article on the differences between the K20D and the K10D.

Just looking for you now I notice that the instruction book also says that at close distances the SR may not function correctly, so there may be tripod related issues implicit in that in that we tend to do macro photography with a tripod.

For those having trouble with the two second delay, if you go yo Menu - Record - Memory and untick Drive, each time you switch the camera off, it will revert to immediate release.

As to the no SR on a tripod thing, I wonder if it may have something to do with resonant frequencies. It is probably designed to work over a frequency range typical to human arms, and a tripod is probably very different.

Back when I first got my K100D I experimented w/ SR on a tripod, taking a number of pictures both ways, w/SR on and off; blown up very large I could see no difference between w/ and w/o. Test was done w/ FA-J 75-300 on a tripod heavy enough for the rig, aimed at a brick wall and some architectural details about 90' away. The rig was not affected by wind as I shot out (an open) window. So, while I still follow the instructions and turn off SR when using a tripod, I feel stupid doing so as (a) testing showed no advantage and (b) I, too, have forgotten to turn it back on. One day I'll be brave and leave it on!

Of course, the experiment may or may not be relevant to other models.

It will also depend on shutter speed and focusing distance.

However, it does use some current so I suppose you could turn it off to conserve battery power.

It could be that it is not an IQ issue, but rather that it does not do the camera any good. My K20 certainly made an interesting noise when I did it.
