Seven Lenses

Two years down the line as a dslr photographer (well at least someone with a dslr) and a Pentaxian I have decided that I need to commit to a seven lens lineup. This is to cover jack of all trades master of none photography. This collection will fit in one large bag, should ensure that all lenses are used and seven is a nice number. The lineup I aspire to is:

DA12-24 f4
K35 f3.5
FA43 f1.9 Ltd
FA77 f1.8 Ltd
DFA 100 f2.8 Macro
DA*50-135 f2.8
DA*300 f4

What do you think?

What would your seven lens kit be?

When I decided on Pentax I didn't really consider lenses much beyond the ability to use cheapo old lenses alongside the 16-45 and 55-300. However when I look at that list I think I made a damned good decision and I'm 5/7ths of the way there.
You can see some of my photos here if you are so inclined

Well, dr, you know more than I do. And if I could ever aspire to a list like that........

Besides, you know damn well that if you could get that DA*300 soon I'd take the 55-300 off you!
This space deliberately left blank.

Looks an impressive collection Dr O.

I'm actually pretty happy with my lenses.
I have the DA17-70, DA 60-250*, Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 90macro as my standard kit.

I also have the 18-135 which will be going shortly, and a couple of other lenses I hardly use.
I sold my DA50-135*.

Sometimes I think a 12-24 would be good, or a 14 or 15 maybe, but I had teh Sigma 10-20 and sold it so I'm not sure I really want or need a uwa and, on the whole, I am content with my 4 lens kit.

That's an interesting idea. And, as it turns out, difficult. I think that my 7 would be as follows:

Pentax 10-17
Sigma 30/1.4
FA43 ltd
FA77 ltd
Sigma 105/2.8 macro
Tamron 17-50/2.8
Sigma 70-200/2.8

But then I'd really miss my WR kit lens and 18-250 for travel and some of my MF primes for fun. 7 sounded like quite a lot and nobody should really need more than that. I thought that my LBA was in remission. B*gger!

As it happens, I'm in the process of rationalising my lenses down to seven:

Sigma 10-20
DA 17-70
FA 50 1.4
DA 55-300
A 50 1.7
A 100 F4 Macro
Sigma 50-500

Both my 400mm primes are going. It'll be very sad to say goodbye to both of them, for very different reasons. The Sigma is compact, light, super-quick to focus, and sharp once you get to F8. So in good light it's very usable anywhere. The Pentax is a thing of beauty, optically very good, but heavy. The Bigma has replaced them both, sadly, since I couldn't afford the Bigma without selling a load of other stuff.

Not sure the 18-55 Mk1 is worth selling - it'll only fetch about £25 I'd have thought, and it'll be a backup for the 17-70 when the latter goes for an AF calibration (it back focuses more than can be adjusted on the K-5). But I don't think it counts as one of seven.

The next stage is to aspirationalise (pace, George) the seven.

The FA50 has always troubled me. It's just the wrong focal length for the APS-C sensor. So I think a 31 Limited, eventually, instead. That said, it would be rude and ungrateful to sell the first lens I ever owned, so the A50 1.7 will stay. It's still really useful for semi-macro close-ish shots of smallish things. The 10-20 is a little quirky, but I can't see myself replacing it with a 12-24 for a while at least, and in any case, for something so expensive, the CA puts me off.

The A100 F4 Macro needs more use before I can work out whether it would be in my seven or not.

If not, what to take its place? Another prime, for sure, but I have no idea which.

If I had to be picky with that list it would probably be swapping the K35 for the 35mm Limited Macro, a little extra speed, macro, autofocus and quick shift.

Seems as if I've just ended up with seven lenses, mainly due to funding one!

DA 10-17
DA 12-24
DA* 16-50
DA* 60-250
F* 250-600
DA* 55
DA 100 WR Macro

Which is just about spot on for me now, but if I could, the 55 and 60-250 would go and be replaced with the 50-135 & Sigma 120-300mm f2.8!

Dr O. I like that list a lot with the exception of the K35(in terms of focal length it's far too close to the 43 anyway). Depending on your intended use I'd swap that one out for a 31 Ltd / Sigma 30/1.4 or Contax Zeiss 28/2.8.

As posted in the 'Journey' thread :-

15 Ltd. (stuck on camera - impossible to remove),
Contax Zeiss 28/2.8 (landscape giant),
Signa 30/1.4 (wonderful creative low-light lens),
43 Ltd (incredibly sharp, great rendering),
Contax Zeiss 85/1.4 (portrait master),
Tamron 90 di (wonderful macro - another one with fantastic bokeh),
Sigma 50-150/2.8 (sharp, quiet, very fast HSM - great all-rounder),
DA*300 (what a stunning lens), AFA x1.7 (is there a better TC ? I don't think so).

That's 8 and if absolutely forced to drop one then it'd be the 43 Ltd but only because I use it less than the others and absolutely not a reflection on it's quality (it's probably the best lens on the list) !

Sigma 10-20mm - check
Pentax 17-70mm - check
Pentax DA* 50-135 - check
Pentax FA 31mm ltd - never going to happen! will stick with DA 35mm.
Pentax DA 55-300mm - Father Xmas has been asked for this one.

not sure I'd want any more- those 5 would be just fine. Well maybe a macro then.

Zoomtastic!

I can see that so far your inoculation against LBA transmission is working well !

If I really had to limit my lenses to only 7, my list would be:-

Zooms covering 12-500mm (with an insignificant gap between 50 - 60mm)
DA 12-24
DA* 16-50 (My most used lens, it's always on the camera)
DA* 60-250 (I often use this lens instead of the DA* 50-135 for its extra reach)
Sigma 150-500

Primes
FA 31 Ltd (It's a thing of beauty)
D-FA or FA 100mm Macro (I have both, dunno why, except I always regretted selling my FA and bought another)
Sigma 180mm Macro

This has been an interesting exercise. I might sell off some of my little used gear to fund a Canon 7D and MP-E 65mm Macro lens. Now there's a thought.

Seven lenses? Why seven I wonder....?

1. SMC Pentax-DA 12-24mm
2. SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm WR
3. SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm
4. SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm Macro

5. SMC Pentax-FA 31mm
6. SMC Pentax-FA 77mm
7. SMC Pentax-DA 16-45mm

Only the first four are essential, the rest just very nice to add to the list.
Best regards, John

Why the 18-55 over the 16-50 John ? WR over a fantastic lens ?

Well it has been a while since I last indulged, even sold one! Although that was the 50-200WR - I'm not going to need it with the 55-300 imminent.

I think perhaps a long period of saving could result in the 31mm. Not sure I have the discipline though It is damn expensive.
