I'm a bit more bothered by 'stop and account for' which as I understand it allows a police officer to stop you and say 'hello, hello, hello what are you up to then' - but with rather more vigour than in ye goode olde days.
I suspect every country has a catch all like the clauses you quote, it's how it's applied as policy and in reality that matters really (as always IMO).

My Mum told me about someone getting arrested for talking photos of Christmas lights - apparently a local news story.
I'm beginning to think a peaceful protest march around London might be called for - as many enthusiast and pro photographers as possible marching round London snapping photos the whole time. Pentax, Samsung, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Sony, Ricoh, Kodak, Casio users unite (for once)! - I'm sure I've missed a few brands there!
PS: For Mr MI5 who's internet traffic monitoring equipment will certainly have picked up on this post - this post is (slightly) tongue-in-cheek and is concerned solely with a peaceful march to protect our rights as patriotic enthusiast and professional photographers. It has nothing to do with any "T" word acts.

* Section 44 allows for searches of people without probable cause. If they are searching people because they are taking photographs and this is deemed to be acting suspiciously, it can't be a search under section 44.
* The act does not give officers power to seize cameras or demand the deletion of photographs.
* Section 44 grants police officers wide-ranging powers to stop and search and is one of the Act's more controversial provisions. Such an authorisation is given only if the person giving it "considers it expedient" for the prevention of terrorism – a rather open-ended clause.
* Authorisations are granted for "areas", for up to 28 days. Once one has been given for an area, any police officer can conduct their searches there for as long as it lasts.
