I bet if you crushed a genuine Pentax battery or drove a screw into it, it would catch fire just as well as a knock-off.

Yes there's increased regulations about the transport of Lithium batteries after the Boeing 787 Lithium battery problems.

There's still no evidence that Pentax batteries are safer than well sourced 3rd batteries though. The vast majority of people are rational about this and find it preferable to pay 90% less for the battery for no extra risk and at worst a slight decrease in capacity.

If you choose to pay the full price for branded batteries then that's fine and it's not our place to tell you how to spend your money , but I can't see anyone else buying the rationale for spending that amount of branded batteries.

My experience over the last two years is similar to Smeggy's - little difference between the performance of OEM and cheap 3rd-party batteries in a K-5. I wonder if Pentax source them on eBay and stick the OEM labels on them?

Cheers.

Chris, you have to know exactly where to drive in the screw. It's been done when someone jammed a battery in a camera backwards.

However, I'm sure you're absolutely right. I'm not trying it though!

John, having an interest in led light probably means I have read a bit more about lithium cells than you, however you'll just have to take my word for it, or do the reading yourself!

All the 3rd party batteries I've ever bought have been branded, so where does a branded battery become a 3rd party battery? Is that in your gift? I bet not many Ansmann batteries are sold in China.

I think the forum should adopt Harvard Referencing, I had to do it for my photography A level and it certainly helped reduce the level of Bs I can spout.
Lurking is shirking.!

Pentax don't make batteries. A 3rd party factory makes them for Pentax and sticks a Pentax label on them. This factory won't use a different production line for non branded batteries as it's simply uneconomical.

Most of the 3rd party batteries you buy are exactly the same as the branded versions. The only difference is the screen printed legend and logo or the stick on label.

But in the consumerist world labels do make a difference and there are people who will pay a lot more money for the same product simply because it has a certain label on it. Supply and demand. You can't blame the companies for catering to both. Some will pay £200 for a Gucci Handbag and others will pay £20 for a similar no name handbag. As long as everyone is happy with their purchase I guess it doesn't matter

Hmm I've never had a Pentax battery fail but had many third party ones that have stopped charging or holding charge, particularly the Chinese eBay batteries.

I wish there were more people like JR that would pay 50 quid for spare batteries - lenses might be a bit cheaper.

I'm just pleased that the battery wasn't changed between the K7, K5 and K5IIS as I now have three original interchangeable batteries, only using one camera at a time

I don't appear able to find any Pentax AA Batteries but my grip is specifically designed to accept AA batteries. Oh dear...what to do?

You buy branded AA batteries Steve, not packs of 100 for £1 on the market?

Eneloops seem to be well regarded.

Whilst I baulk at the cost of a Pentax OEM D-LI106 battery the only batteries I've had any problems with have been third party offerings, never a Pentax branded one.

I think I might just stick with the one supplied with my MX-1 (when it arrives) for now and see how it performs.

Thank you for your patience with my sarcasm John and to some degree I would agree. I once trashed a Portable Music System with market batteries, however, Pentax don't make batteries, and neither do Carlsberg.

If I was to give advice to another it would be to use batteries from a retailer and brand big enough to sue when they break something expensive.

I use Calumet rechargeable AA. Branded but probably made by the same factory as a dozen other companies, branded and otherwise.

I'll give this ebay battery a whirl but it's as a spare that may never see the camera. You pay your money and take your chance.

Good point.
I could imagine, in some years to come, we'll
have non rechargeable throw away batteries . Each Camera maker has its own size . A K3 equivalent camera sells for 40 Bucks and each battery cost 100 Bucks .
If its good enough for printers it will be good enough for Cameras.
