SDM 16-50 lens focusing not working

Mattox, where are you based? EU protection goes far beyond the warranty. I am not an expert, but the principle is that manufacturers are responsible for problems due to original design/manufacturing issues..... It would seem to me that this would apply to this lens, given all the cases reported.
What do the experts say? I would contact Pentax.

Thanks giorgio. I am based in rome italy. Think you might be right. I will contact pentax directly and see what they have to say. It is just so frustrating. I paid so much for this lens and only after short usage it has gone off. Any other suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried on Pentaxiani.it to see if others have experience in dealing with similar cases with Pentax in Italy?

Stand firm on the believe that you've the extra warranty though, i think like most companies they will try to get out off it
The DA*16-50 is a pro-grade lens so they are expected to last longer then normal lenses also.

Hi, did a bit of research to refresh my knowledge about the matter....

Here you can find relevant information in Italian: http://www.ecc-netitalia.it/BeniConsumo/le%20garanzie%20dei%20prodotti.htm

And here is the key points about warranty in EU:

- legal warranty about conformity of the product is provided by the seller, not the manufacturer, and it is 24 months for new products, 12 months for used products.
- manufacturers' warranty is on top of the legal warranty.

So, if you bought the product in Italy (or in the EU) less than 24 months ago, you should ask for repair by the seller (or replacement), the seller will then make their claim with Pentax.

I would still try also with Pentax....

On the web you can also find the standard repair/replacement request based on EU regulations.

Thanks guys. I have just updated my K10 firmware in hope that something might change the focusing issues. However, nothing really changed. Just now I have found that if i switch over to manual focus and wind in and out many times, once I switch back to auto it seems to work a bit better. This could possibly be a focus jamming issue? In the meantime I have emailed technical support for pentax italy and we'll see what they say. Unfortunately i purchased the lens over the net from prodigital2000 in canada, so the EU support I dont think will help too much. We'll see.

They might if you've registered the lens for worldwide warranty.
Gwyn knows more about that.

Hi there - had some similar issues with my first sample of this lens. How long ago did you buy it? Was it one of the first batch, I know my original one was.

SRS sorted mine for me via Pentax UK in the end? Tooks two attempts at repair but in the end they simply replaced it for me. If you have a good relationship with the shop that you bought it from, try them first of all - remember that they will (hopefully) want to have a satisfied customer.

For the record, my 2nd sample has been faultless and it's an amazing difference in autofocus performance between the 2 lenses. I don't actually know why I put up with it not being right for so long before I approached SRS & Pentax for a repair/replacement!

I believe you must go to the shop first because you've a (sale) agreement with them, going directly to the manufacture might dissolve any responsibilities the shop has, at least that's how it works here.

Well to open an old topic, the lens has woken up and the motor is in working order again. Don't asked me what has happened. Just come back from a wedding shoot and used the lens, plus my 35mm fa. I have found formsome reason 30 percent of the shots taken with both lenses have focusing issues. To some it up I have set focus on auto centre point and basically a lot of shots are focusing the background not the subject. Maybe it could be the body??? A k10. I am buying a new k5 this week so let's hope that the issue resolves with the new body.....??????

Difficult to say anything without looking at the shots. I would tend to double check focus in those circumstances as I don't 100% trust autofocus. If the subject is small in the frame it can easily lock on to something in the background.

My *16-50 died while I was traveling, less than 3 weeks after purchase ( a record, no doubt).

Sent it back to SRS for repairs and got it back two weeks later. So far, so good.
