sharp all the way to 200mm and no softness at all.

That is about half the price the Pentax 50-200 is here in the Netherlands..

Is it, apart from the coating, identical to the Pentax version in build?

It is identical in all respects apart from the outer livery. The coating looks exactly the same, but isn't labelled SMC of course.

Couldn't agree more. I bought this a week ago and it's fantastic. Jacobs are actually selling this in store for £99 with a big sign saying it's 1/2 price! So at 1/4 price it's a steal. Fantastic lens.

actually its a bit soft at the edges at 50mm.

and the auto focus is bloody slow compared to my FA50mm, (on my DS anyway)

but i agree its a great value lens at £58 shipped. not worth the RRP of £200 or so though!

i'm pretty sure it is SMC just not branded as such, its very contrasty and saturated. (too much really, but good for snapshot/consumer use)

Throwing something else into the mix here - hows does the the Tameron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD macro measure up to the samsung/pentax 50-200?

apart from the longer reach (and pretty fast @f/4 at it shortest) it looks a contender as sourced at £99

btw I compared the Schneider (Samsung) with it's Pentax sister today in Jessops and it's not an exact clone; the moulding is different with subtle but notable variation in size of the zoom and focus rings. Is the Schneider optically identical to the Pentax build? They are after all different manufacturers

The cosmetics of the Samsung GX10 and the Pentax K10D cameras are slightly different, but the body internals are designed and made by Pentax, the Samsung variant has its own firmware too. I think the same is true of the Schneider lenses in that the glass and internal mechanics are one and the same, only the external casing/livery is different.

On that basis, I too bought a Samsung 50-200mm lens from Jacobs for £49.99 + shipping. A real bargain in my book. Currys still have the same lens listed at £29.97 . . . but I defy anybody to find a shop that has one in stock, and they are only available on a 'reserve & collect' basis.

The point is that they aren't different manufactrers - the Schneider lenses are made by Pentax in the Pentax factory. The different cosmetic arrangement is purely that.

I got the Tamron 70-300 at the same time as the K10D, from Jessops, for £99. Haven't really used it much yet, although I have tried a few macro shots in the garden which looked absolutely fine. Also printed off an A4 taken at 70mm which was fantastic. (Upped the sharpness +2 and the contrast +1). It's a bit noisier than the 18-55 kit lens when focussing, but I expect that's to do with the design/size of the lens rather than the manufacturer.
