Insurance would seem your best option and if you don't have specific camera insurance then perhaps check out your household contents policy.

Yes it's most likely the plastic cover like you said, if they can replace that without opening the camera it shouldn't cost that much, although you never know

Replacement back covers shouldn't be too expensive (IIRC, I picked up a new one for the *ist-D for around £6), but replacing it may be tricky... it might just be bonded to the back with some thin double-sided sticky.

Thanks chaps, I', going to check what my house insurance covers and give Asahi a ring - fingers crossed!
