without the names of the SLR/Model we really do not have much chance of advising you.
We here are all Pentax/Samsung users and would obviously guide you toward those products , but the lenses would have to be compatible.
Plenty of good second hand stuff available - that`s all I ever buy and have done for 20 odd years.
Let us know the camera type first please.

The lenses are Pentax compatible (They have the red dot) I have the camera with me at the moment. It's a Progam A.
She bought it in the 80's second hand (if i remember correctly)

Excellent - then I would start looking at our own store SRS who have great deals on many used cameras and are safe and reliable.Also there is a forum here for second hand stuff - also safe and reliable.Ebay is where I usually go but beware the dodgy dealer - always use Paypal and compare prices before buying.

Which lenses does she already have?
You could get a Pentax K-x (entry level) for £369 or £389 with an 18-55 kit lens.
The new K-r is due imminently and may push down the k-x prices too.
If you are inexperienced, go to someone you can trust if you want to buy second hand.

I agree, the K-X is a great little camera and one of the smallest and easiest to use.
It can even do video if you want

Cool, will go have a look at those.
The lenses I have to hand are both Pentax-A, one a zoom (70-210mm) and a 50mm. I know she has a wide angle lens but not quite sure what else (it's been 13 years since I moved out and probably about that since she last used it )
She has a fair bit of kit, as she did a course in Telford College in Edinburgh when she bought the SLR.

One thing to keep in mind is that all those lenses are manual focus. Nothing wrong with that, I use older manual focus lenses all the time, but modern dSLRs are much less easy to manually focus than your Mum's Program A. I'd make sure you get one of the "kit" lenses with the camera so that she can get used to the camera first before testing out her older lenses.

As well as SRS there are a number of good camera shops who are vary reliable. If you see something you like and want to know if the shop has a good reputation, just ask.
Where in the country are you? There may be something local.

Am in Aberdeen, so we really only have Jessops or Currys or the like. The nearest Pentax Pro dealer is over in Glasgow.
Forget Jessops, they are not good enough to stock Pentax and Currys may have them in stock but the expertise may be a little lacking so you could go and try one to see how it feels then look for the best deal.

Sadly, I an confirm there are no independent camera stores or repairers in Aberdeen or the surrounding area. The local Jessops branch used to be a goldmine for second-hand equipment, but no more. On the bright side, you don't have to feel guilty about giving your business to a lower-priced internet-based company.
As others have said, you won't go wrong with SRS. In fact, the postie delivered a parcel from them today.

Have thought about getting one for her Christmas this year (as a joint one from the immeadiate family) and not sure where the best place to look for prices is. All we are looking at is the body at the moment as the lenses from the SLR will be able to be used on a DSLR (I can't remember the correct name for it).
All we know is that she wants to go digital, she hasn't said which model she would like and our budget is probably not the largest so second hand maybe an option.
