Road accident

Well - We were driving along in a line of traffic on a main road towards Torquay and I notice a cyclist flying through the air and ploughs into a keep-left bollard. All trafic stops and wife gets out to phone for an ambulance. I'm staring at the poor dude and all the people trying to help him and then realise I have the K20d in the car - So I sheepishly get it out and roll down the window, sit the lens on the ledge(Cos i'm shaking a bit!)Fire off a few frames sharpish and put the camera away. Police turn up, wife gets back in the car and we're on our way.
When I told the wife that I took some photos she was quite angry and said stuff to me!
I really hope the poor guy is ok but he really didn't look too well at the roadside.
My dillema is this - Would I be a bastard to put a couple of the photos on say flickr? ( Lens was the mighty 18-250mm so the're quite graphic) I think if the guy didn't make it I wouldn't but any thoughts would be much apprieciated.

What a dilemma! Personally speaking I would not put them on any of the popular sites. Keep them private, but then again if photographs are not taken then we would not have the images of the child in Vietnam after Uncle Sam`s flying visit. Or the fellow with his head shattered by a bullet. Life is not always a rose or a blue tit a scene from a holiday or other nice view.

Don't put it on Flickr - but contact the police and say you have photos taken at the time - they may well be interested as by the time they got there, I'm quite certain things had been moved .

Your pics should help them get a reasonable idea of what happened and where people / cars etc were.

BTW - these are no longer RTAs [ Road Traffic Accidents ] I'm told - but Road Collision Incidents - someone was to blame for the collision - the meeting of Cyclist and car / or whatever he hit , or was hit by

You seem (I emphasis seem) to want such kudos as is attached to reportage without having the balls to get out and do it right. So unless for some reason the shots are compellingly wonderful I'd say you shouldn't post them on Flickr. But what do I know I wasn't there.

well on the one hand there is taking rubber necking to an new extreme...
on the other hand, this fella, the police, or the newspapers may have an interest in your shots for various reasons..

If the pictures don't serve a purpose other than to satisfy morbid curiosity... why post them?

By all means let the cops know that you have decent photos and send them a copy, but after that I'd say to delete them. Wouldn't want things like that in my collection.

Certainly do not post them online. A senior cop recently got into a lot of trouble (rightly so) after showing photos of a dead motorcyclist to the press without the permission of the deceased's next of kin

You surely do not need to get permission of next of kin to post photos taken in a public place?

This is a question relating to good taste not law surely?

My understanding is that you could publish these photographs taken in a public place.

Personally I wouldn't publish them (or even have taken them) but you might offer them to the police for their investigation.

I think you answered your own question, the above statement clearly shows you have doubts and how you would regard yourself if you posted them, plus it wont earn you any brownie points with the missus

That main road into Torquay between Penn Inn and Kingskerswell is a real accident black spot and lousy with permanently queuing traffic. (Use the back road through Decoy) The photographs may well be of value to the police in any investigation into the RTC - especially if the cyclist didn't make it Definately a no no on Flikr I think

Flickr won't allow them under its terms of use, of that I'm sure.

Offer to the police. End of.

I have to concur with Alan Chapman here, you have you own doubts about what to do. Personally I would not post your images anywhere, offer them to the Police for any ongoing investigations, they could, serve a use and offer help to all concerned in the accident.

I find your post heartless in the extreme.
