Don,

Hi - my comments are from one who has never used a ring flash...
The reflections of the flash in the cat's eyes are fascinating, but that may just be a novelty factor for me.

The white border is a little distracting due to its brightness, and it crops off the ends of the cat's whiskers. Is there scope to widen it, and decrease its brightness? There's something blue above the cat's head that you may be able to clone out.

It's an interesting approach all the same Don, with some potential. How do you think you might apply this idea next?

Tremendous shot Don, but have to agree with comments about the whiskers.

I agree - excellent shot. The cat looks a little sinister in some ways but that's not necessarily bad. The only (tiny) distraction to me is the little 'blip' in the inner top right part of the white ring.

Cool photo

Great shot. I saw the original as well, in Online Photographer I think? How did he get the model's fingers around the edge of the flash, is it in PP or is the flash some distance away from the fisheye?

I found it on strobist, and he was using a rayflash or something, perhaps he had a little more space around his lens than I do with my ringflash, but she had her fingers on the inside of the flash right by the lens in his shot.. but you are litterally looking at the inside of the ringflash... it is vinetting, the white circle is the edge of the flash, and the background behind the cat is an underexposed kitchen window... everything outside the ring is actually the inside of the lens hood and inside of flash mount...
(the exposure, M, was f18, 1/125s, 100 iso.

kittys wiskers are cut off because they were outside the opening of the flash, it was a grab shot...
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Oh I see!!! I thought he was holding the flash out in front of the fisheye (do they have hoods?).

Anyway, it's a great shot. If you can figure out how to make it more obvious that it is the flash (and not a white circular frame added in PP) it should be even better.

the pentax 10-17mm fisheye does have a built in hood....that happens to be threaded, so with a step down ring, my ringflash screws right on...
