I am thinking about buying a ringflash.

Does anyone have any views on which might be best out of the Metz, Pentax, Sigma and Sunpak models that are currently on the market :

I would suggest looking at the spec. sheets for each, then go and have a look at them for build quality etc.

I have the Pentax AF160FC ring flash and I can only say it produces excellent lighting. I've no knowledge of the other brands.

My only gripe with the Pentax flash is that they did not include any wireless capability so It can't be used to trigger other P-TTL flashes wirelessly and still retain full P-TTL functionality. I think this would be useful for studio work.

Unlike Mannesty, I'm not happy with all the p-ttl flash stuff, and prefer tobwork with manual.
So I'd say any decently built flash would do, but I like my old af 080c.....

here's a ringflash shot I made with mine:
(I'm a big believer in using the ringflash with other lighting for contrast control)

Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Peter,

Can you confirm which adaptor rings are supplied with the Pentax AF160C ?

There seems to be conflicting information on the internet on this point.

I recently got the Sigma and (in the limited time I have had it) think its excellent. According to the manual it also has wireless capability.

Not sure how it compares to the others though.

I got 4 screw on adapter rings with mine. 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, & 67mm.

You also get a bayonet adapter to fit the D-FA Macro lenses. It fits in place of the hood.

Hope that helps.

Peter,

Thank you and for the PM.

Having researched the subject more, I have become convinced that the Pentax ring flash is the one to go for.

I agree with all Pete's comments, its an excellent flash.

I would have liked to be able to disconnect the flash head from the power supply, but the cable is fixed.

I wouldn't have minded paying them ten times the amount that silliness saved them.
