right angle viewfinder

It sounds like you've bought a right angle finder that was for the Spotmatic + K series cameras (pre 1976) which had a fractionally larger eyepiece surround. The finders for the M series onwards (1976 - current) tend to fetch quite a lot more money on eBay (£100+) which is why many of us end up using the Chinese "Seagull" right angle finders instead (around £30-40 new).
I'm sure you could probably bend and manipulate the one you have to fit with pliers and a Dremel but if it were me I'd probably re-sell it and put the money into a Seagull finder instead.

PS. The Seagull (and the later Pentax) uses a prism that shows you the image the "right" way up.
