Extra lenses for K10D

As someone new to Digital Photography, I have a K10D fitted with a Tamron 18-250mm zoom. I am looking for some advice about lenses to complement this good but rather 'all in one' lens. I'm going on a special holiday to Vietnam and Cambodia soon and expect to take lots of landscapes and buildings, especially the temples at Angkor Wat. Any advice please gratefully received!

DA 16-45 would do you as a walk around lens or the 50mm 1.4 or 1.7.

Pentax 12-24mm or Sigma 10-20mm. These get a lot in the frame and create dramatic perspective effects when you are close to the subject. You're bound to love one of these.

The 16-45 is nice, but wouldn't provide much hugely different to what you have already.

A 50mm would be good as well for people-shots and picking out details from buildings, especially in low light. You could find a second-hand manual-focus one cheaply to leave more funds to invest in other lenses or equipment. They're also small and light.

A telephoto lens with a larger aperture could be useful too, but it'll add considerable bulk and weight to your bag, so perhaps not for the holiday unless travelling heavy!

I would go with the Pentax 12-24mm or Sigma 10-20mm as well as you have 18-250mm covered.
I should think you would want to travel light if trekking round the countryside.

I too would recommend 12-24 or 10-20. I got the latter and it was hardly off the body for months. That said I think I'd rather have the 12-24 as the 24 is probably more use than the 10.

The 12-24 or 10-20 would be my choice, and maybe an old manual 50mm if you have the room (light and cheap but good for a faster aperture).

I think the short wide angle option is a good one too. I'm guessing light shouldn't be an issue to the wide 12-24/10-20 types seem to make sense.

Out of interesting what about the 14mm prime? quicker lens and fits in with his current lens nicely.

F4 to F5.6 tends to be fast enough for ultra wide-angle since for that you rarely want a shallow depth-of-field, and you can hand-hold at slow shutter speeds.

It's a bit shorter, otherwise there is not much difference between the 14mm and 12-24mm in terms of price, size, weight and image quality according to photozone.de.

its really worth looking out for a 50mm prime second hand. I have the 1.4 jobby i got last year full price and love it but my sis-in-law just picked up an old manual 50mm f2 for less than £13 off ebay, that was after keeping a sharp eye out as they had been going for much more. And I have tried it and am impressed. small and light too so no pressure on the camera bag. I'll also put a word in for the kit lens for value for money, mines the older one on the k10d, and i do like it, these are pretty cheap to pick up, and i think on ebay are pretty common too. this is all assuming budget is tight, if not, see above!!

For what it's worth I bought a bunch of A primes and barely used them. I'm not sure why I guess I'm just lazy about auto focus and my older eyes just aren't so great at detecting focus. I sold them and haven't missed them at all.

That said I do like using my 35 FA and I hope I'll enjoy the 70 Ltd I have bought recently.
