Thanks Alan, but it's not a feature in LR 3 through. The CA adjustment doesn't seem to have an affect. LR4 has two methods. Under the Lens Correction section, a simple tick in a box gets rid of most of it. If there is any left, just clicking on it with the eye dropper gets rid of it well. And it can be used multiple times
I used to have Paint Shop Pro X2, and that had a simple 'PF removal' button, which is ideally what I'm after.

With some of my lenses I have big issues with this, sadly I have not come across a perfect solution either.
I am using LR4.1, and that 'Remove Chromatic Aberration' button have never done anything for me. The eye drop tool to select colour to defringe does help a bit though, but not exceptionally well either.
Hopefully there are some solutions in PS that I have yet to come across that allows for more detailed localized corrections
(If anyone knows how to select a localized area, and only defringe in that area in PS, please enlighten me.)
For now I do what I can to correct it before I even take the image.
I know more or less on the dot, in what lighting, and at what aperture and focal range my own lenses will show sign of fringing or colour cast.
The best suggestion I have is to get to know your lenses, and if you really want to shoot in a range where the lens produces PF, see if you can shoot on a less contrasty background.
(Someone threw in the idea that a Haze-2A filter could help. Now why would that supposedly help?)

Elements or Photoshop:
1. Add a new layer
2. Change layer blend mode from Normal to Colour
3. Pick a soft brush, about the size of the PF, Alt-click to sample colour nearby and paint over
That'll get rid of it

Thanks all for your suggestions so far.
Re your comments SnoozeMoose, the trouble is I seek out high contrast shots being a great fan (but poor practitioner) of contra jour .
MattMatic - too much PF in my shots, and too little patience I'm afraid.
I'm really looking for a silver (purple:lol bullet solution that'll sort it out across the entire shot with one press of a button.
As said earlier, there was such a button in PSP X2, so why can't Adobe do it?

Get a better lens? MattMatic - too much PF in my shots, and too little patience I'm afraid.
PF is a function of lens & sensor, and often a function of aperture too. (My DA*16-50 suffers from transverse CA at apertures wider than f/4)

They do. It's in LR4.1 and Photoshop I'm really looking for a silver (purple) bullet solution that'll sort it out across the entire shot with one press of a button.
(Note it's not in LR4, but only LR4.1)
Actually the CA removal features in LR4.1 I find to be superb (read: the best I've used). If the lens is a profiled one, then axial CA is removed automatically, while transverse CA and blooming is removed with a dropper approach. The DA12-24 and DA*16-50 clean up fantastically and actually increase sharpness - because it's processed at the RAW stage!
The only thing I can say is to Google for different methods that would fit your workflow.
Failing that, work with B&W contra jour

If it worked for you in PSP X2, then the only thing I can think of, even though a bit troublesome, is to load those throubled images into PSP, remove PF, and export them.
Then load them into whatever prefered software you use now.
(You could probably automate this process aswell.)
However first I would suggest to test out the option in LR4.1, and see if it is enough for you or not.
We could compare it to lenses.
What you are after is one that covers everything, something like the Fujinon 101 for your camera.
But isn't it better to just use the tool that you find most dedicated to the given task instead?
Adobe probably can never do what you love from PSP, simply because patents prevent them.
[edit]I can post an image later, of my heaviest PF situation on any lens I own, and I challenge you to correct it Matt

MattMatic - lens is DFA 100mm WR macro, so I hope I can't do better, but body is K20D, so could be time for a K-5 II(s?).
SnoozeMoose - PSP x2. Tried to load it up again, but despite being a full retail version I keep getting a 'Trial version licence expired' message. Waiting for Corel tech support to come back to be. To the best of my knowledge full retail licences don't expire.
Both - LR is v3, so again, could be time for an upgrade.

Yes, I found the SMC-F 100/2.8 macro to be a PF demon in backlit settings MattMatic - lens is DFA 100mm WR macro
Didn't shoot macro that much, and use the DA*50-135 now and that's hardly ever a problem in any setting.
PF isn't such an issue in macro settings
LR4 is now £99, and I think the upgrade is £59 - which isn't bad at all! Unfortunately, I don't have any SMC-F 100mm images to hand to check whether it'll automatically and completely remove PF
