Lovely clarity on the bird, like the angle too. Not so sure about where the bird is in the frame, and the b/g bokeh is perhaps a bit busy.
How are you finding the handling of the Sigma, Tim? Unless a s/h bargain arises, my next purchase will probably be a 70-200 or a 50-135/150. I think it's the bulk of the former which most puts me off them (though the shorter tele-range is also perhaps more practical for me), so I'd be interested to get your impressions.

Thats a good shot Thoughton, Great clarity and detail on the bird.

Dr M, the Sigma seems excellent so far. Fantastic IQ, but it is so huge, especially with the hood, that I feel a bit self-conscious using it! The weight isn't too bad though. Having said that I'm not sure if the 50-135 or 50-150 (the other alternatives I was looking at) are much smaller! The matched 1.4x teleconverter was a consideration as well.
PaulM, apart from cloning out a post behind his tail feathers, and a single blade of grass in front of his face, this hardly needed any PP at all. No sharpening or saturation, and a single click on the + contrast in Aperture. This is a landscape crop from a portrait shot, so I didnt have any more width to crop with.
Mat I didn't notice that feather! Might have to break out the clone stamp again

I can also now see that the extra feather is a cloning error!

thoughton is right the 70-200 is a great lens, especially with a x2 converter slapped on the back, but yes I do feel a bit on an anorak lugging it around

iBerg these are 'wild' in that they run around the fields and cross roads and get hit by cars etc., but it's not uncommon for farmers who organise shooting parties to restock their own land every year by releasing hundreds of captive bred young pheasants. I'm don't know for sure that the local farmers do that but I wouldn't be surprised.

Aha, I thought to myself, a perfect opportunity to try out my newly acquired Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (thanks PentaxAnne!)
I turned the car around, and drove back towards the bird, but unfortunately when I got there he was just disappearing back into a field of oilseed rape.
Nevermind, I thought, so I pulled into the next lay-by, intending to turn the car around once more and head home. As I put the car into reverse I looked over my shoulder, and lo and behold there was another pheasant standing not 20 feet from me!
I took this shot through the car window, then it saw me and ran off
