Red Snapper Ballhead question

I've just opened the packet containing one of these which I ordered a couple of days ago (excellent service given how everyone else seems to be in the usual dazed state!) It's a lovely piece of kit, just one thing I can't quite figure out - which of the two knobs is supposed to control the friction on the ball and which is supposed to lock it in place? They're different sizes and one is slightly higher up the head than the other.

The confusing part is that both seem to be able to place some friction on the ball and/or lock it in place, but I'm guessing it will work best if I use the correct one for each job!

One should be the panning lock and the other the ball friction control. The bigger one should be the friction lock.
Didn't it come with instructions?
You can damage a ball head by over tightening it so I am shocked there were no instructions with it.

What I've worked out so far:

The far smaller knob closest to the base is the panning lock, and the similar one on the side of the head locks the camera mount plate to the head. I couldn't find any instructions in the box but I doubt I've over-tightened anything as I've been thinking in terms of "just tight enough to stop it flopping over".

Sounds about right .

Well, after some more playing it seems that the larger knob should be used to control friction with the smaller one locking the ball. I found that if I tried it the other way around the camera had a tendency to flop over when you unlocked it, this way there's still enough friction to avoid that.

Just want some decent weather now so I can get out with the KM and roll of Ilford SFX to take more infra-red photos. The Red Snapper bag thankfully has enough space to store the IR filter, cable release, and spare QR plate too!

You always can call John. He was in the office today till 1430h (spoken to him today about some spare parts I need).
He is one of the most professional people about and really cares.
Any problems I would suggest just give him a quick call on Tuesday when he is back in the office.
I do not want to post the number here but if you need it PM me and I forward it to you.
Kind regards

Should be ok now - as I said, it worked fine both ways but I thought it was probably best used according to the designer's intentions rather than by fiddling with controls until it did what I wanted!

I've read that this head allows you to use the Arca Swiss mounting plates, I may look at some of the longer ones of those (or at least 3rd party copies thereof as the genuine parts seem to cost more than the ballhead!) with a view to improving the balance with some heavier lenses which lack their own tripod mounting ring.

I'm impressed with the QR plate too, which may sound odd but it's very slim as opposed to the huge lumps of metal or plastic some brands expect you to leave attached to your camera!
