Recovering memory card data?

My friend with whom I was out shooting last week has informed me that his mac crashed whilst downloading shots from his memory card.
The data on the card appears to have disappeared. Is there any way of recovering it?
I have noted some members stating that images can be recovered from a card even after it has been formated. How is this done?

How to Recover that Photo, Picture or File You Deleted Accidentally

Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo on your camera, computer, USB drive, or anywhere else? What you might not know is that you can usually restore those pictures—even from your camera’s memory stick.

Windows tries to prevent you from making a big mistake by providing the Recycle Bin, where deleted files hang around for a while—but unfortunately it doesn’t work for external USB drives, USB flash drives, memory sticks, or mapped drives. Luckily there’s another way to recover deleted files.

There's also FreeUndelete which works from a USB stick which I find works very well. Its about 2Mb download (Google will provide numerous sites offering it)

There is a caveat though that it is unlikely (unless you work for MI5 or CIA) that you will recover any data from a formatted card. If you have taken any pictures after the deletion took place then sucess is limited.

Formatting especially Quick Format which it usually is doesn't reduce the chance of software recovering Data.

I have used 'Recuva' successfully, again this is freeware and simple to use. I have no idea how it compares to other software, but did the job I needed to do.

There are some free software available u can search them on google but I do not believe in free software as it will end up messing my computer with virus and spywares and whether it recovers your data intact or not is not guaranteed there are chances that u end up loosing your precious data. So I look for cheap and good software. For recovery software, I bought one before called Kernel for Macintosh, good thing is that it's one time payment and then it allows me to use forever. Take a look if you do not mind paying to get back your data, U can also download d trial version from http://www.datarecoverymac.com/
Using trial version u can preview d data recovered but to save it u hav to purchase the software

I think the far more interesting point is that a Mac owner admitted that it crashed!

I think Mr Jobs boys will be swiftly on the scene ensuring that the user is 're-educated'!

All the software does is read the data so it doesn't alter anything on the card so it's pretty safe

Some Mac owners foolishly run Bootcamp off one drive partition, and infect the other drive partition with the windoze virus... for some inexplicable reason...

lexar has a recovery program you can try for free, to see if any images can be recovered, but it bills you for the software if you want to actually recover them....
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
