Really k5!

Yay! Looks like 3rd time lucky! I picked up the replacement K5 today and it looks like the sensor is actually clean! 4012XXX serial number and manufactured 11 March 2011. Not just no stains, no dust spots at all - every other DSLR I had came with a couple of spots. Still firmware 1.01, but that is a job for another day. Time for a quick flick through the manual while the battery finishes charging.

Well done Ambient. I did the same myself last Saturday, traded in the K7. That manual takes a bit of reading though.

Have to admit to not reading any of it! At least it has a real paper one. I managed to input my copyright details (same as Kx), set my memory settings and take a few shots. From the Kx it is not that far a jump, I am surprised that side by side it seems much closer in size as well, I was expecting a real noticable difference. My only gripe so far is not liking the position of the green button (only using it because I have not foiled my old smc 50mm and wanted to try out CIF) but I am sure I could work it out if I bothered to do a bit of reading. Have been out playing today after work, loving it, thanks guys. Out for another play, I am an experiential learner.

Once you're used to a Pentax DLSR, you can probably do without trawling through the manuals on future model, except where there's something specific. My K200D manual was in French... I just used my istDL2 manual instead if there was something I needed to know! 90% of it was the same!

Talking of manuals not changing, one of the following illustrations is from the Z70 manual, back in the eighties, and one from the K7...

just bought K5 myself. had to do a check with the helpful information here as i did not know you could check the manufacture date. mine is May 2011 and a 4053XXXX serial so am hoping that i dont have any QC issues. did think it odd that it still had v 1.01 firmware on it but maybe they dont put latest firmware on before it leaves the factory.

having come from 35mm Canon A1 through EOS 300 then LX3 compact i am looking forward to having fun with this bad boy.

Incidentally I see your Avatar is Brighton West Pier - what's left of it!! If you look at my Portfolio you will see I have almost the same shot - although you have better breaking waves!!

West Pier, sadly even less there now than before. The horizontal beams are all taken down now and they have removed the old domed ceiling that used to be exposed on the really low tides. You used to be able to walk in under the domed girders.

Too much of a Health & Safety nightmare I should think!
This is what it used to look like 20 years ago, seen through a Pentax P30N and what I guess was the SMC 50 f1.4.


Actually just noticed, that seems to have been scanned the wrong way up, the other pier should not be visible, or the sea should be on the other side.

A sad end to a beautiful structure.
