Ok, quick bit of processing .. wren is quite a heavy crop and I dont think mine is much different to yours, the Grebe has just gone through my normal processing with some added sharpening.

Based on all the above, do you think the IQ of the lens is up to par/acceptable?

Looking at the original of the grebe it looks OK.... just
needs a bit of sharpening.

I wouldn't think there was anything wrong with the lens.

Looking better Roger. Those whites on the head are recoverable though.

Processing raws is such an ease with Lightroom 4. It is not hard to bring back or front focused shots to life.
Personally i just apply a little sharp(tweaking with masking and detail options too), a little NR, move the purple and aqua sliders till the chromatic aberrations dissapear. Levels, colors and exposure i tweak after in photoshop.
Sharpening in LR is very sweet!
