Neil,

For me, the first works best, on account of the way you have managed to isolate the subject better with your choice of DoF. We have a batch of quinces in the fruit bowl here now, as it happens - great 'olde worlde' fruit.

cheers for the comments, I have to agree. I have not sorted DoF out on the digital yet, my old manual SLR had ref to DoF on the lens so what I think is shallow on the digital appears not to be. I will have to do a couple of experiments with it.

Neil,

An f stop wider than f9.5 (as indicated by Photome) used for the first of your images here, would give you much more control over your out-of-focus areas.

The lens focal length reported was 55mm - even if this was the kit zoom, you've got ample scope to open up more to achieve this.
