Yes it is the same for second-hand items.
What is the value of the item you're considering?

Items costing under £18 (including postage) aren't subject to any charges.
There's VAT on items over £18, and Duty on items over a certain amount (would have to look it up), plus a handling charge of £8 by the Royal Mail. Other couriers may charge more.

Thanks Pete, I suspected that would be the case.
Had been looking at a couple of lenses costing in the £200-£400 region.
I think by the time VAT and Duty is added back I wouldn't be far off the new price over here.

If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Just wondering if anyone can answer a query I have re: VAT on personal imports.
When I have bought new items (generally guitars) from Japan and USA, I have been required to pay VAT and Duty on the items before the shipping agent will release the item to me. Fair enough.
I was just wondering if this is the same for second hand items being purchased, for example, off a forum user.
Can anyone help?
