Q-ing in the garden

A Q + 01 isn't what I'd normally use or recommend for flower photography. However, having just taken some record shots of the collection of sempervivums (houseleeks) that's what was in the hand during a wander round the front garden. So why not point it at some flowers and press the shutter button, even though it was the middle of the day which is hardly the favoured time for doing such things? Well, here are some of the results. All processed from RAW files, cropped and curves tweaked.

It is indeed, even though the photographic press dismissed it because of its small sensor and it didn't sell well because of its high price. But most people who bought it came to love it and appreciate the quality of its tiny lenses. If any camera can be considered 'fun', this is the one. And what other camera with a full set of lenses from wide angle to telephoto will fit in a jacket pocket ??

Good, detailed and colourful images, Steve. I don't have a Q but feel similarly about the MX-1, another small sensor Pentax capable of remarkable results although, of course, it doesn't have the possible focal range of the Q.

If my memory is correct, the story (which may or may not be true) was that the original intention was to put the MX-1 sensor in the original Q. However, the sensor wasn't going to be ready in time so an available, but smaller, sensor had to be used. Meanwhile, the lenses had been designed for the bigger sensor. The MX-1's sensor (or something very similar) eventually went into the last two versions of the Q. I've got one of them (Q-S1) and the sensor is noticeably better. But the body is a bit bigger, much more 'plasticky', doesn't seem as robust and IMHO doesn't have the same 'fun' feel as the original Q.
