PSR Shutter

I'm not aware if this observation has been mentioned before:
When making a pixel shift resolution image with the K-70, pressing the shutter release captures 4 images, but the focal plane shutter is actuated only once. Nevertheless, the shutter count in EXIF increases by 4.

Not directly related to the K-70 but I have seen that the K-1 shutter exif counts one image as 4 shots when using pixel shift.

The PS technology uses electronic shutter during the process so there is only one mechanical shutter operation.

So doing a lot of PixelShift will reduce the value of your camera more quickly!!

That is an implication of this observation, Nigel.

The shutter count will no longer give a reasonable indication of the use of the focal plane shutter. E.g. If a used camera is on sale with a shutter count of 60,000, the actual number of actuations could be anywhere between 15,000 and 60,000.

I suppose shutter count is about a close you can get in camera terms to a cars mileage figure .... I'm just wonder whether shutter count is so closely linked to overall wear and tear such as mileage is on a car. I suppose you could use a camera for video and live view extensively but not take many actual photos, however you would be wearing out all sorts of other things as you go. Likewise, you could leave a car sitting out in the elements without driving it anywhere, and it would also deteriorate.

Good point about Live View. Just what does it do to the insides? It certainly hums and whirrs a lot.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Yes, very good point Nigel, although I would guess that the focal plane shutter is the most highly-stressed mechanism in the camera body, given the distance of travel of the curtains and their rapid acceleration and deceleration.

I would take a more pragmatic view and say that if you found yourself liking the results and thus using PS a lot to the extent that you over-inflate the shutter count by a significant amount, you will be getting such good pictures that you wont be bothered with re-sale value. You would not want to sell it !

Which is more likely to wear out first? Shutter or sensor - K1 series are rated at 200K shutter actuation I believe; but does one anyone know what the Sony sensor can do other than 2 years guarantee? I'd say Pentax believe the shutter mechanism is sturdier than the sensor and covering their liabilities.

It all depends on how many shutter presses your index finger is good for

Using Pixel Shift and finding a different way of holding a cup of tea would greatly improve it's life
