Profits from Purchases?

I would like to think that any purchase made on this site from fellow members was 'as a matter of fact' a genuine one. And that there was no intention of anyone 'trying to profit' from a purchase!

I may be wrong, as some people in life have a commercial purpose.

Personally if I make a purchase of equipment it is for my OWN PERSONAL USE. And the only reason that i may sell on would be if the item in question was not commercially viable. And if this was the case. (admittedly I hope unlikely over this site), then the vendor would not like to be posted as a 'Charlatan' selling fake/inferior quality goods!!!

Kindest Regards

Paul, that's a very strange post. Why not send me a PM telling me what's going on?

In a general sense, all purchases are between the seller and buyer and it is sensible to take the approach Caveat Emptor.

I've no idea what that was about, but it's equally true that once an item has been sold then it has nothing to do with the seller what the new owner does with it.

However, I'm guessing. :
Best regards, John

Hi John

Perhaps it is not a strange post. I would only discuss this with you as a PM.

Very curious post,
For me as long as an item description is accurate then all is fair.
There will be occasions when an absolute "bargain" comes up, and it may be bought with a view to sell on at a profit, but the risk is always that it will actually sell. At the end of the day the buyer will only buy if they want a particular item at a particular price.
I think a good example is the recent Curry`s DA 100mm Macro offer, I have seen used lenses with greater asking prices. Some may indeed be buying to sell on, but nobody makes the purchaser buy it. Is this moral? probably not, is it ethical? possibly not, but it is legal.

Correct, a very curious post, BUT a reason behind it!

Perhaps I will let it drop now!

Since you've mentioned this, any advice on sensible procedures when thinking of buying through the Forum? For sites like eBay there are guarantees: how can buyer and seller using the Pentax Forum be sure the transaction will be secure? I've noticed that buyer often leave feedback, which is great - but this doesn't always help. Just contemplating an item on offer....

I can only say that every purchase or sale that I have made here has been perfect.

It makes sense to wait until funds have cleared either by PO, personal cheque, paypal or even cash before sending goods. Sellers usually show extensive photographic evidence of their items.

But as John said, caveat emptor.

I have bought from and sold items to forum members. Never had a problem.
There is of course no safeguard offered, so it is very much a question of trust and common sense.

I admit I made a tiny amount on the sale of my 10-20mm . But that was because I got a really good deal on it in the first place, and Sigma up the price shortly after I bought mine, thereby increasing the second hand prices too. I could have made a lot more on it if I'd tried.

It make sense for the vendor Ken, but not so for the seller. I have recently been bitten by this one on another forum.

Back toward the original post, I have noticed that there are a few people here who only buy and sell things - they do not take any other part on the forum.

I have bought several items on this forum. I think I have actually sold one. (no one wanted the other couple of items I offered)

All the items I bought are still in my camera bags(if one lens is not enough, then one bag isn't either!)but every time it has been a pleasant experience.

I think you are more trusting, could be mistakenly, of people you have some connection with i.e. through the forum. Also the transaction is very public and most of the time everybody works hard to be seen as fair and honest.

I believe quite a lot made some money with some Pentax lenses.
The DA 12-24 is a prime example, it cost now more secondhand then it did new 2 or 3 years ago

But if the price they ask for is close for the going rate secondhand than that off course isn't a problem, they are just shall we say; lucky.

I don't think anybody would sell counterfeit on here and last long without being denounced/unveiled.

I do think one or two people make a decent amount of profit from buying and selling.

I've bought and sold a few things and have mostly been entirely pleased.

I've bought quite a few things as well - and always paid by Bank Transfer so I have been able to tell the vendor that their bank has accepted the money - and this gives them a warning to look for the money being credited . So far I've had no problem and hopefully the vendors have been satisfied as well.

I've withdrawn from a sale as I felt that [ having had advice from another member ] that the price was a little higher than it should be .

I've passed on 2 items as well - one was as a gift [ and I was told when that one arrived and was thanked for it ] and the other went at a reasonable price to someone and that buyer [ no names no pack drill ] was very happy .

My reaction is that I will happily buy from a member with a reasonable post count , and I see posts from them . I would be slightly wary of buying from someone who appears only to sell something and then vanishes until they want to make another sale.

I wonder if Paul thinks people are on the forum buying up items to sell on through a commercial outlet?

As long as the seller and the buyer are both happy, does it really mater if someone make a small profit?
