I use an HP all in one, with Vivera inks and a grey cartridge for B/W. I am very happy with it both as an all round printer and as a photo printer.
I don't print that many photos at home though - I'd rather send them off and have them done. Cheaper, and maybe they'll last longer. Although the Vivera ink is very good and seems colourfast so far.
Sorry, that doesn't answer your question though does it?
If you are planning on doing a lot of printing then the price of ink is an important consideration imho.

use MP810 and its as good as I need for A4.
scanner is pretty handy too (film and slide too)
takes 5 ink carts, CMY + B +B
you can buy the real canon inks with 100 year life if you want the longevity.
Not cheap though!!!

I use a HP D7160 for 8 1/2 X 11 or smaller, a HP B9180 for A3+, and a HP Z3200 for large format. I guess I'm happy with HP.
The actual reason I use HP is because my print shop (as in litho, not photo printing) uses HP products for proofing, so I get good prices due to the large quantity of products we use.
Whatever printer you use, if you stick to well known brand, you won't go wrong. The results you get from all of them will be very similar. Buy what gives you the best return on your investment, taking into account the cost of ink. Don't just check the price of the cartridge, look at how many prints you can get with a cartridge. Also, make sure you're comfortable using the product you buy, and look for after sale support.
And, after all that, enjoy your prints.

For my HP D7160, I use generic inks. They are cheaper, and the cartridge hold more, and they are more pigmented, which means I have to "tone down" the ink supply, thus getting even better "mileage".I use two printers 1. Epson PX650 2. Epson R340 both are very good BUT the ink is well lets say not the best price out their
Unfortunately, that supplier doesn't make cartidges for my two other printers.
As for Canon and Epson printer, you can look at Niagara Ink system. It's a loty cheaper than the stuff you buy from Epson.

I have been using Epson for years and upgraded from the R360 to the PX710W about a year ago. The photo print quality is excellent.
One word of caution - this is the fist Epson printer I have owned that really does 'demand' Epson paper to be used. No other paper I have tried gives results even close to the Epson Premium Glossy stock. This may be a profile issue - but I have never gotten around to checking.
As for ink cartridges - I rarely buy originals. I have been using the same supplier of Epson 'compatible' cartridges for years and the quality is always so close to Epson that I can not distinguish any difference. A full set of Epson cartridges is around £40 - I pay around £8 for compatibles. So cost of print is not an issue.
I would also say that I bought the PX710W because I wanted an all-in-one so I could 'lose' the seperate scanner taking up desk space.
If I had just wanted to print photographs - I would have bought the Epson P50 - which is basically the same photo printer as the PX710W - without the scanner/ wi-fi etc - and at less than half the price!

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more
