Price of pentax equipment in Japan

I have just looked at the BicCamera website - they are also at Shinjuku.
A DA*16-50 is priced at ¥126,000 - which converts to about £920 although they suggest a 10% discount will be available. The DA*50-135 is te same price.

I presume that you did not pay any purchase tax on anything you planned to take out of the country. Passport and travel itinerary = no tax !

Yep, I factored in the tax reduction - but the lens is c. £450 at srs. A lot less than on offer here. I'm in the US at some point before coming home, but I don't rate my chances of finding a DA* in the airport.
The reason for picking the 16-50 lens, is that I was amazed at the performance of the 18-55 kit lens. I was expecting it to be adequate, if that. It's proven to be crisp, and perform well in most lighting conditions. I've got a 50 prime with me, and the kit lens out performs it in any outside situation.

With the current dollar sterling exchange rate you won't get a bargain here (US) either I'm afraid. I bought my 50-135mm last Christmas when the exchange rate was $2:£1, it is now only about $1.5:£1. I doubt you'll do much better than SRS I'm afraid.

I'll be in San Fran, but on the 12th January - when the new visa rules come into play. I don't rate my chances of sorting that out, so I think I'm stuck in the airport. I'll be over the moon if pentax lenses feature in the duty free shops, but past experience has proven magazines and books might be the only purchase options...

I was in Japan 2 months ago..... amazing how sterling losing a third of its value suddenly makes buying from the US, Europe and Japan quite expensive....

I have brought several lenses from overseas but I made a point of purchasing the DA*16-50 from a local retailer because of the reported issues with this lens, I wanted the ease of returning it if I had to.

Not for long. I would expect UK prices to rise considerably next year. If you want to buy, now's the time. Next year's prices will reflect Sterling's new status in the world - not worth much.geclinke wrote:

Just wanted to say that the strength of the Yen really isn't helping the price of equipment in Japan. I was hoping to pick up a DA* 16-50mm while on holiday in Japan, but in a good, competitive, store in Tokyo, it was twice the price of SRS.
For what it's worth, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Yodobashi Camera, near Shinjuku station in Tokyo. They were amazingly helpful, and really sorted me out with a sensor cleaning kit - without which the remaining 4 weeks of my trip would have been dissapointing with my k200d.
