Apparently the jpg is full size. It would have to be in order to show the file zoomed in on the camera screen.

I just looked at the sample file in a hex editor, and compared it with one of my own DNG files. I used XVI32 to look at the actual bytes.
In my files there is a section of the file near the beginning that has camera details and so on. In the bad one it looks like picture data right from the beginning. The file is still a DNG file, it has certain strings in there the same as mine, but the file itself doesn't appear to start from the right place in the data.
I suspect that the problem here is that the address table for the files on the card got corrupted, so the physical files as known to the system don't match exactly the correct file extents that are on the card. Trying to recover the files from the card correctly is probably the best bet, the data is all there but not attributed to the right files at the moment.
There is some Sandisk file recovery software that used to come with their cards, I used it once to recover some files that I'd accidently erased. Perhaps that's worth a try, but it only works if the card has not been written to after the error first occurred.

Do you have a link to the Sandisk software?

I thought I'd have a go. I couldn't open it in Preview, or Photoshop CS5, so I tried to open it in GraphicConverter. GraphicConverter is famous in Mac Land for being able to open lots of things even Photoshop will choke on. When I tried in GraphicConverter I got an error about 'file missing/folder missing', but the file still opened:

So, at least you know the images are still there! (That is presuming that the above is not just the embedded jpeg!)

Yes, the file could be the embedded jpg - are you able to save it and link me?

But... if it was the embedded jpg it wouldn't have a bit depth of 32... would it?

I think someone already mentioned this but I didn't try it.I'm surprised no one has suggested this yet but have you tried copying the files directly from the camera via the usb cable?
I just tried connecting my camera via USB and a further LR import appears at first glance to be successful....
If this has worked I cannot begin to thank everyone enough.

So if your camera can read it but your card reader can't then 1 or the other is marginally out of spec. So I think you are going to need to try reading that card in another card reader/computer to help establish if the issue is with your card reader or your camera ...

I only use the card reader if away from home, as my notebook has one inbuilt.
Great if it has indeed worked for you this time...

The Sandisk software I mentioned came with an SD card as a freebie, it was then possible to unlock it but registered to me. I think the paid-for version is expensive. But valuable when it is needed...
It does sound like there is a discrepancy between the card and card reader somewhere, it certainly needs more investigation. Glad it seems to be working out with the cable...

I always use the cable when transfering from the istD, those tiny pins for the CF cards look too fragile to be constantly removing and replacing the card.
With the SD I do tend to remove the card from the camera and use a reader, but I have had that very problem in the past where a reader has refused to transfer an image, yet the USB cable has had no problem.

I've got a card which my camera will read, but card reader won't. I put this inot my old mobile phone ( which has a full sized SD card slot), plug that in via USB and copy the files from there.

I'm surprised no one has suggested this yet but have you tried copying the files directly from the camera via the usb cable?
