The card, if it's readable, should still have the files, but it's possible that many of them have grey sections. If the DNGs appear on the camera, you've got a good starting point.

Try Photorec and see what that comes up with. You will want to copy the contents of the card somewhere else, first.

The thumbnails are just that, I would not rely on them for anything.

Turning the K5 off while it's writing to the card will not break anything as the camera continues to empty the buffer until it's done (witness the orange light). I had some errors with the JPGs from the weekend, but that was because I was copying to a disk that decided to disconnect itself halfway through. Those pics are frequently half grey.

you are correct, now that the coffee's kickin in I remember testing this on the kr on purpose and was not able to replicate the original problem.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I'd like to upload one of the apparently corrupt RAW files so other people can take a look - where is the best place to do this? I do not have any webspace.

I use www.sendspace.com

As for file recovery, you could try www.pcinspector.de who has an excellent & free file recovery program. I've used it several times when SWMBO has pressed a wrong button on her camera or when a card has seemingly gone rogue.

One suggestions is to try to use explorer and see if the files are .PEF or .DNG.......

Had this happen to me on my old *ist D after I'd transferred the files to a card reader, a couple of hours changing the filenames back to .PEF and all was well....

Sounds salvageable, hope it is... I would echo the suggestion to keep the corrupt card intact, ie lock it. Just work on copied files.

And yes, it's not a new problem - an old friend photographed a wedding using his Bronnie ETRS....these have a switch that disables with winder - no prizes for guessing what happened. He declined my offer of help beforehand, chosing another friend, whose photographic skills were non-existent.....

OK - here is a link to one of the files that I am having trouble with.

I dare say that if you dump it onto an SD card you will be able to view the photo on your camera but I cannot get it into any program on the PC.

provided you have a suitable PSE installed.

Come back if you haven't

I thought I'd have a go. I couldn't open it in Preview, or Photoshop CS5, so I tried to open it in GraphicConverter. GraphicConverter is famous in Mac Land for being able to open lots of things even Photoshop will choke on. When I tried in GraphicConverter I got an error about 'file missing/folder missing', but the file still opened:

So, at least you know the images are still there! (That is presuming that the above is not just the embedded jpeg!)

I had a problem after one pro shoot, as second shooter, recently when the Pro called me up after the shoot to say he couldn't open one of my cards - though it seemed the files were there. I tried and failed to open it via all other means then remembered that if any single file is faulty then subsequent files won't open either. If it's the first one (as happened with my card) then it stops all subsequent files from opening .... so I deleted the first file on the card and hey presto .. . the files now opened as they should. This may be worth a try.

Other than that, since Tim has shown the files are still there, there are many specialist file recovery companies that can get your files off the card for you.

GetDataBack for FAT is one of the best Data Recovery programs that you can buy. It will even recover re-named files and moved. It doesn't write to the drive being recovered and just copies the files off it after a thorough scan.

It won't do you any harm running the DEMO it will just list what can be recovered.

From the website:
"Download the trial version and recover your files. You can preview your data to be sure it actually works. If you like the results you do not need run the program again. Purchase the license key and enter it into the open program. Then copy everything you need!"

http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

Only 2.42MB Make sure it's the one for FAT not NTFS even though you will be running it from an NTFS drive.

Good Luck!

I think the problem here is that what you are posting is a copy of a file with corrupt data, that neither you or anybody else can get much out of. Because the data is corrupt!

However, this doesn’t provide any clues as to whether alternative methods might extract additional/missing data from the original media.

I would try to take a look at this comprehensive article, with detailed step-by-step instructions: HowgtoGeek: Recover Data Like a Forensics Expert Using an Ubuntu Live CD

Good luck!

I just looked at the sample file in a hex editor, and compared it with one of my own DNG files. I used XVI32 to look at the actual bytes.

In my files there is a section of the file near the beginning that has camera details and so on. In the bad one it looks like picture data right from the beginning. The file is still a DNG file, it has certain strings in there the same as mine, but the file itself doesn't appear to start from the right place in the data.

I suspect that the problem here is that the address table for the files on the card got corrupted, so the physical files as known to the system don't match exactly the correct file extents that are on the card. Trying to recover the files from the card correctly is probably the best bet, the data is all there but not attributed to the right files at the moment.

There is some Sandisk file recovery software that used to come with their cards, I used it once to recover some files that I'd accidently erased. Perhaps that's worth a try, but it only works if the card has not been written to after the error first occurred.

Oh and by the way, for sharing files try http://www.dropbox.com/

You get 2GB of free online storage, and various ways you can add to this at nil charge.

Install, then just drop files you want to share into the public folder, right click and obtain a url anybody can access.

Or keep them all to yourself shared across multiple computers, synched via your network or the net.

GetDataBack can recover the files even if the two copies of the FATs are damaged. FAT = File Allocation Table

You could also make an IMAGE of the card which could be written byte for byte to another card or mounted on the PC with a new Drive Letter.

"All Image" should be able to do it link

I shot my first (paid) wedding today and after taking every precaution that I thought possible i.e. buying a second camera body as a spare, extra lenses, spare radio triggers and lots of practice and research I was seemingly kicked in the balls by what looks like an SD card failure.
I don't want to inject unnecessary alarm, but was this for friends/family or for an 'outside' client? (not that it makes a difference, but it might affect how understanding they are.) If the worst happens and you can't recover the images, do you have professional indemnity insurance?

I have read that the RAW file contains a fairly acceptable jpg preview image that although not ideal is at least something. I have yet to find a program that will extract this for me, can anyone help?
The jpg preview is (IIRC) a very small thumbnail image, and not useful for much more than its original purpose (i.e. as the 'icon' for the RAW file in photo album software)

I'm surprised no one has suggested this yet but have you tried copying the files directly from the camera via the usb cable?
